So my understanding is the my Viper HS 6-24X50 has 50 MOA of adjustment for elevation. I was wondering why the hell I could not sight it in bang on with a 20MOA rail on my rem 700 at 50 yards. I had to switch to a falt rail Looking at the other Vipers the base model Viper PA 6-20X50 had 68 MOA of elevation and the Viper HS LR has 75.

My eye is not seeing and difference other then the XLR Reticle and 7 more MOA of adjustment for a huge price difference then the base Viper. I am needed a second Viper for my new 300 win mag.

I thinking the Viper pa 6-20x50 is the best choice. Am I missing something here ?

I should mention in winter I am limited to the 50 yard indoor range but in warmer weather I would like to get into long distance. My new Savage has a 20moa rail so I know I do not want another Viper HS

IF you plan on getting into "long" distance, then use the 20moa rail. Trying to zero at 50m is kinda wasting ammo imo, unless you're talking 22 etc.

You should have no problems getting to at least 700-800m with 0moa, if your scope zero's perfectly, but personally, i've never had any of my rifles zero at the exact mid point of the scope.
good luck.

I have a Savage with a 0MOA rail and I've been out to 1,000 fairly consistent

Just a novice at this stuff myself, never been anywhere close to that distance, furthest for me is 600m, once

But from what i've read and heard from the knowledgeable. The best glass on the lens is generally in the middle of the lens as opposed to the outer edges, therefore, with the 20moa or more base, at further ranges you will be viewing thru closer to the middle of the lens. And at extended ranges you want to view thru the best part of the lens for the best image.

While i'm sure that the top tier scopes have consistently great glass across the entire lens, most/alot of them at the lower prices will probably be as I mentioned.

I would stay away from the regular viper lineup. I just sold one due to the eye-relief. I thought it was much to small at full magnification compared to the HSLR or PST etc. Have you thought about a smaller degree of cant ie, a 10MOA rail instead of 20. I believe farrel offers a 10moa as well as probably EGW

. . . . it's still summer, so wouldn't it be better to get out to a range with longer distance before winter actually does hit?

Got the rail on the right way?

Rails on the correct way. I tried another scope I have with more MOA adjustment have no issues sighting it in at 50 Yards with the 20 MOA rail. I will keep the HS on a Flat rail for winter and it will be fine I can swap it to a 20MOA in spring when I hit the outdoors and out door ranges. I am still looking into the base Viper 6-20x50 BDC with 68MOA. I am not really seeing the Value in the Viper HS LR for over twice the price with 75 MOA the glass is the same. Looks just as clear to me.

The glass coating on the PA and HS/PST/HST lines are different but I don't know how that would translate into appreciable picture quality. Why not just get the HS-T which is also 75 MOA adjustment. Only diff is it's SFP vice FFP. I prefer the HS 4-16x50 myself but I don't see myself shooting past 700 yards so 50 MOA is plenty.

Cheers,
