Just picked up a new remmington 597 HB. For a 250$ gun it is pretty well built. Love the last round hold open!! looking for advice on fun little up-grades from the 22lr crowd. Pics would be great! thanks guys/girls

Hammer & extractor for sure. The hammer change makes the trigger pull very nice. A good scope & away u go. Doen't say wear you are at, but I have a 2-7 or 3-9 for gophers & a 8-32 for paper. It is probably my fav. to take to the gopher patch. My buddy laughs when I double tap gophers-it is just too easy.

GREAT advice thanks guys. Not into the tacticool AR looking stocks. what ammo are you guys running? I haven't got out to the range yet to try her out.

CCI Minimag, CCI Blazer, Fed Bulk 525, Win M22, Win 555/333 works fine with my R597 HB. Win Wildcat has plenty of FTF/FTE. Plated bullets are cleaner. CCI Blazer is bare lead but seems to be cleaner than Wildcat and Remys.

GREAT advice thanks guys. Not into the tacticool AR looking stocks. what ammo are you guys running? I haven't got out to the range yet to try her out.

Just sold my spare set. Brownells; Milarm in Edmonton; Bashaw Sports in Bashaw Ab, all sell vq parts. Brownells only sells it's own extractors now(I think) but they work great by reviews.

I sort of got into 22-wmr, and the 597 in 22-wmr was the first I bought, nib. Haven't shot it yet. The OEM mags are kind of cheap feeling and looking, though, the mixed aluminum and plastic (as I recall, haven't looked at it in a while). I think my gun is matte black. I bought a matching small cal. black scope for it. I'm glad I bought it.

They are cheap, also, first and second generation mags have feed issues. Second gen mags will not always hold a full 8 rounds because of the feed issue. The problem is the rails on the back and front of the follower, these rails are exaclty the same size as the indent on the mag body. Once the pot metal starts to corrode, the follower jams. The third generation mags have a indent twice the size of the rail. You can fix the second gneration mags by shaving off the rails on the front and rear of the follower. The third generation function flawlessly. Regardless of the mag, keep it clean and shiny inside of the body indents and you will have no problems.

The other issue is the rod guides, the book says torque to 10 ft lbs, Rimfire Central says slightly over hand tight or you will get top hats.

There is debate on the exactor, I have the original in mine and no problems, so do have problems some do not. Try the other stuff first then buy the extractor. I also have the McQuag spring to lighten the trigger it is half the price of the Volquartsen hammer.

I fired my 597 Magnum with 6 3rd gen mags and 3 2nd gen mags, 72 rounds in 1.1 minutes, no stoppages. I like how the mag drops out the mag well when you release it, makes for a fast reload! If you have mag problems PM me, I worked through all the problems with the second gen mags.

I went through many different brands before finding one that mine likes. Used to jam a lot but after I tweaked the bolt a bit, jams (fte and ftf) are now near a non event. What I found was the contact points between the bolt and rails, had sharp edges and needed rounding and polishing. After that (and a good oiling) no more issues! I found with low power rounds would cycle the round but not reset the hammer. Now run the federal bulk stuff and it seems to like it but still playing with brands trying to get the groups a bit tighter.

My .02

Oh and mines the 597 TVP version (with laminated thumb hole stock and heavy barrel) and got it at bass pro while they briefly carried it

Have had a 597 VTR heavy barrel for 4 years or so now. Never had any of the issues you hear so much about. Haven't tweeked anything and cycles everything I've tried. Accurate as my abilities and stock trigger much better than a 10/22. Rem hi-cap mags work fine too.

Thanks, Fraserdw. If I get to the point of starting to use the 597 magnum, I'll contact you. Nice resource to have available! Thanks.

Without tweaking...what sort of bench 50 yard pattern can be expected of the new 597 with heavy barrel ?
looking at one just for inecpenive trigger practice..
what about the new cabelas 22 rifle scopes?
thx

Not that mines one of the accurate ones but I'm getting a crappy 1-2" (5rd)patterning @50 but still trying to find ammo it prefers for better groupings(and a bit more shooter practice)... but it's taking a while cause I don't get to shoot as much as I would like to.

Charging Handle/Bolt, VQ Hammer and Extractor, a Tacticool/AR looking Stock, topmount red-dot or a good scope, extra 10 rounder mags. Beware of the OEM 25-rd mag.

I have three 30 round mags, one black and two clear. The clear mags function flawlessly while the black feeds poorly, usually jams or just doesn't feed at all after the first couple if rounds.
