Hey there Fellow CGNrs.
im couped up with a knee reco so im scanning sooo many pages its not funny... I thought it was hunting season over there!!? wheres the photos?

Anywho, I had a question for you guys as it makes more sense to ask Canadians with the more extreme weather differences compared to Aus.
Although where I am from can be up to 42 Degrees Celcius in Summer and in the Coldest morning Temp say around -5 in which would only be for a few hours etc.... an im not goin out to shoot a round for testing LOL

How do you guys find Varget is with Temperature ranges in regards to holding Velocity?

I hear its supposed to be pretty good from one extreme to the other?

I now use AR2208 (Varget) almost religiously now barring one small can of 2207 for a .375wcf but that irrelevant.

I do read a lot of your reloading quiries in this forum an theres always a lot of mention about Varget. so thought here would be best place to ask.

Have you tested Warm V Low temps?

thanks
WL

Varget is one of the best for not having a problem with temp swings.

Varget is not always the absolute best for accuracy, but it is 100% reliable with respect temperature swings. i like it for team shooting because if it is a real hot day some guys will have serious problems if they had a hot load of a regular powder.

Same thing holds for hunting. If it happens to get real cold, it is good to know the ammo still works well. I have used 2208 for hunting ammo for 20 years.

Awhile back I was testing 30-06 loads that I had to develope in our winter to have loaded in Australia. Because of this, I used Hodgdon powders that I knew the ADI equivilants to. What I found is that from -20 to +40 Varget hung in there pretty good, but from -20 to -40 the bottom fell out of it. The saving grace was everything thing else was worse. When you start seeing 165 gr 30-06 velocities with 2209 (H4350) that are limping along at 2600 fps its sort of depressing. Varget would at least do 2650 even though its slower in the book. Leupold was good about it, they keep cutting me yardage dials. The current one reads 2850 fps for the same Varget load that only did 2650 fps in the deep cold.

I don't think you'll see cold enough temps you'll ever see the difference.

In 223 is there a better alternative with a 69gr bullet 1-9 twist (looking for alternatives) 100-200

I would opt for IMR 4895. The US military uses a powder very similar or the same in their 7.62X51 NATO cartridges. This would suggest to me that it is very stable over a wide range of temp. If Vargent was a better choice I would think that they would be using that instead.
