what is the purpose of mentioning cheap ammunition then unless you have a lot of free time? Accuracy is a moot point as well with how accurate semi autos are today.
Regardless my comment was for the op who was considering a new rifle, I already have thought about a non semi 223 and it was a non starter for me for the above reasons.
my post was to the op on something to consider, I already edited my post because I realised you are not the op after I replied. Why are you telling me I should consider a bolt when I am not the one looking for a rifle?
On the other hand, if you're patient you can get a good deal on a better rifle than an Axis. I bought a very lightly used Remington 700 SPS Tactical with Leupold rings and bases installed for $600. Its a great shooter, feels good in hand and not so heavy that you need a golf cart to carry it in the field.
If you buy the current axis you can lighten the trigger pretty easily by clipping 1 1/2 coils from the trigger spring. I don't like the look or feel of them but they will shoot.

I have been researching Remington and discovered the majority of reviews rate them poorly unless they are pre 1990.
But thank you for the help. For my budget I am looking at the Savage axis II that is on sale now but I also saw the Savage 11/111 FCNS and I am considering that as its the only one with the Accu stock. Seems like there is not much of a choice with accu stocks. That being said I am sure you can change the stock on any rifle but I am too new to consider that at the moment. I will eventually learn but that is for later on.

Actually I read that the .222 ammo is harder to find that's why I leaned towards the .223.
My budget is around 500 bucks as my wife is getting pissy at me right now because I also want to duck hunt and have to get a waterfowl gun and I have no knowledge of the shotgun world lol but that is a whole new topic!

Yeah, that is what I said.... the 222 is harder to find and more expensive..... a cheap pump used shouldn;t run you that much money for a waterfowl gun.... I think you would get more bang for your buck used, but that is just me.....

I have a savage axis in .223. Absolutely love it!!! the amount of money spent the gun has been awesome!! no issues!! just take some time and get used to the trigger before try to take some varmints with it!!
Then you need to get one..... lower priced guns = happier wife (or more guns in my case.... lol)
I disagree with that statement. Just had a peek on Cabela's site and they are selling the Federal 222 ammo for a buck less than the 223, Hornady 222 ammo for two bucks less and the Remington ammo is the same price. In fairness though, maybe it is harder to find in Ontario but not where I am in Alberta.
That's the best. Bolts are by far the most accurate for long range hunting and those levers are great for bush guns with shots under 100 yards. Nice and light, easy to swing, I like to keep them with iron sights. If you were close I'd let you try out a few but even meeting half way would be a hell of a road trip lol

Ditto...and if one wants to spend some extra to get a top flight .223, then get a Savage 10 Precision Carbine.

If it's a range beast there are 525 dollar AR's out there.... And I'm sorry, once you get one.... Yeah, it's a range toy. That's what you said you were going to do anyway. You will not be disappointed. Just got my first AR and the things are amazing. It's not exactly what you are leaning at but if you have or can get Restricted... Just do it.
