Question for the medium bore fans...

It depends how each would be set up. Lets suppose you have a .338 with a 26" match grade barrel, topped with a 4.5-14X50 scope, and your .375 wore irons on it's 20" barrel. I can see each of these rifles filling a niche that could not be filled by the other. If both rifles were identical, I'd keep the .375 and ditch the .338. If the .375 had a 26" royal blue barrel, a AAA+ presentation grade walnut stock, a color case hardened receiver, and engraved with gold inlay, while the .338 had a short stainless barrel, and was bedded in a fiberglass stock, I'd be looking for .338 components. But that's just me.

Looking strictly at the two calibers, I would say they're geared to be used for the same animals in North America.. As for recoil, I find the 375 more pleasant to shoot, the 338 has a sharper kick. This is comparing the two calibers out of the same rifle, same weight, so a very fair comparison.
There's no reason you can't own both though!
 
Women that I know have confided that men who have .375H&H's also have bigger #####es .... coincidence? I think not!
 
Had one, a Sako Mannkicher style but somehow never formed a real attachment to it and ended up putting it up for adoption. Don't know why, but, no regrets and no ambition to get another.
 
Hows the recoil comparaison between a 375 ruger and 338 Win mag? I have a 375 ruger, and it kicks lots.....uncomfortable to shoot. I was thinking my self of a getting a .338.....but the only rifle I would like a 338 in would be a Ruger African model with out the brake Or a Win M70 CRF...

I have had several 338 Win. Mags and two 375 Rugers.
In a heavier rifle ( 8 to 8+ lbs ) recoil of the 338 is not too bad.... about like a 300 Win. mag, however in a lighter rifle it can be nasty.
In my Rugers, an Alaskan and an African, the recoil was more manageable in the African perhaps because the stock on the African was a better fit for me.
Also the African was more comfortable to shoot off the bench maybe because of the slightly longer barrel ?

Fairly recently acquired a Winchester model 70 Super Express in 375 H&H to match the same I have in 458 WM and to;) fill a 'void' in my calibre selection.



At 10lb 5oz, it's relatively comfortable to shoot.
 
Lots of personal preferences in this thread incl my own. I like 35s and 375s. :)



The OP would be just as well served with either a 338WM or a 375Magnum for most NA bigger game hunting. One would make the other redundant.
