I mostly hunt paper, but in the fall I get my upland gamebird and usually shoot a few chickens for a good meal. This year I think I want to get a whitetail tag and try my hand at that. Thinking of using my SKS as I'm pretty confident with it to 100 yards. Was wondering if anyone else has used a SKS to hunt whitetail with? How did it work? Good or bad? Was also wondering what a good soft point hunting round would be? I've mostly just seen Privi for softpoints.
 
S&B or PRVI makes a soft point for hunting. Its a light round, however. 127grains is for close range only with its low end of energy.
 
Took a fair sized buck last year with my SKS with no issues. Prvi softpoints on a quartering towards me shot through the front left shoulder, got an exit on the other side... the buck only made it about 10 yards. No complaints here.
 
Prvi Partizan is the most widely available hunting ammo that I have seen in Canada. I have taken mine bear hunting but never for deer; never shot anything with it.

If you're looking to buy bulk surplus ammo from, say, Trade Ex, they will sometimes include a box of Partizan without charging extra for shipping (you gotta pay for the ammo, obviously). If, like me, you have a hard time finding it locally sometimes, you can get a box or two this way at reasonable cost.

As long as you stick to your 100 yards and less you will be perfectly fine, much further and the consistent accuracy will become an issue, well less accurate than I would like to use on an animal at 150 or 200 yards.

Buy appropriate ammo and go hunt and enjoy.
 
The Prvi Partizan I have seen locally, is that a decent hunting round though, capable of cleanly taking a deer? You would think with the increasing amount of bolt guns chambered in 7.62X39 that the big three ammo makers (Winchester, Federal, and Remington) would have started making it by now.
 
SKS works great for whitetail if your hunting in the bush. Dropped a big old buck with one last season at about 50 yards. He barely went ten yards after I hit him. Cant remember what ammo I was shooting though because it was my buddies gun and bullets. Overall I was super impressed with it, i would use it again for deer no problem. It was accurate and real easy to shoot. Definitely good to go inside 100 yards. The bayonet was pretty funny too.

Strangely I can't see any limitation in the RELM book other than caliber. Seems like there was a 1.75" limitation years back IIRC.
Which would effectively remove the 44 Magnum from the table, good thing we got that weak-a**ed round sidelined:confused:
But I digress.
Bear made a 154 grain hunting round, still got some kicking around I believe. Certainly hope I was not 'coloring outside the lines' when I used my SKS to take 4-5 deer.
Pretty short range action required though. Most folks that I've hunted with would push the boundary of their cartridges effective range upon spotting a decent deer at 200 or 250 yds. If you can't turn down the shot; then acquire a more powerful rifle.
My thoughts anyhow...
 
I bought an SKS this summer and going to use it this fall.. (tired of the usual bolt/scope combo)

the concern that I have with commercial ammo are the light primer strikes when closing the bolt.. even with a properly cleaned firing pin, you can still see a dimple on the primer that worried me.. (Due to it being free floating)

so what I did, was go out and get 123 grain hornady bullets.. I pulled the surplus FMJ's and loaded in the hornadys' shoots just as accurate at 100 yards (4" groups with ironsights)..
