Well I finally signed up for my Black Badge course

Do you guys have pointers for this newbie :p. I hope to renew my appreciation of pistols.

Shooting paper got boring fast and hoping this will put the fun back into pistol shooting.

The only pistol I have is my sig 1911 target for the course. with 4 Chip power 10+ mags ;) Hopefully she doesn't let me down.

I have 4 Kydex mag pouches and a Blackhawk holster. The finger push button has been shaved down, So it just works like a retention holster . This is the only gear I have at the moment. will upgrade in the future.

Nice gun for classic division, should work just fine. The only "but" in the whole scenario is your 10 rounders which will get you bumped to open in a match, but they should be ok for the course.
 
The course is awesome and will certainly get you well on your path to exciting shooting. One quick comment of caution however - you should never alter any safety equipment especially making it inoperable. Your Blackhawk holster was designed to safely retain your firearm the way it came from the factory. Altering that retention could, at a minimum, get you a DQ at a match if your firearm drops out of your holster. At a maximum - who knows. If you want a holster without a finger push button buy a holster without a finger push button.
 
You might want to check with your Black Badge instructor about the suitability of your holster for HIS class. "Retention holster" is a term that has different levels. This is a good discussion to have before the class because the instructor may bring holsters for you to try out. 1911's have many different holster styles since it's design that's over 100 years old...

Also verify the number of mag pouches you'll need. Running out of bullets before engaging all the targets sucks...I learned this the hard way...a couple of times...with predictable results to my score...

I get by with 4 pouches and one magnet. A magnet can be quite useful.
 
A good stiff belt. At my course the instructor looked us over for our kit and emphasized the importance of a good belt. Some guys had loose belts and it impeded draws and mag changes.
 
1.5 inch belt will do just fine.

The belt is very important. Not ###y gunfighter kit but it's the foundation of a good rig.

10 round mags are fine if you declare minor in Classic................then I looked at the mags. Too long to fit "the box" so that will bump you to open division. No reason not to use them for the course thou.
 
Thanks for the input guys. Im not sure if I actually want to do matches with my 1911. So until I figure out what gun to buy I won't invest in new kit.

My 2 inch SOE belt has velcro lining, I just need to find an inner belt.
 
The equipment that you currently have will do fine for the BB course......it is best not to tie up to much money until you are sure you want to stay with the sport or not . Some try IPSC , and move on to other shooting sports , some stay on a limited basis....while others become heavily involved in the sport . If you decide to stay with IPSC , then you will see what the other competitors are using for kit ; and they can suggest what works best for IPSC matches.....
 
Id swap out that holster when your done for a bladetech, so you can just draw without haveing to hit that little button. You will have enough to worry about if you go forward without having to worry about that kinda holster.

Remember finger off the trigger unless firing lol. Dam i got yelled at.
