...perhaps i wasn't paying attention to other posts but when i removed the rear sight leaf spring i found that i was looking into the tube that contains the second piston in the gas system! ...i assume that this is so that the ram of this piston has a place to vent so that it doesn't build up too much pressure in the tube? ...or?

Theres no gas pressure to it only energy from the piston

...i apologize that i'm not being very clear in what i write

...i understand that there is not any gas in the tube ...i was thinking that with the sudden movement of this plunger, that any air in the tube would be under a lot of pressure with no outlet and am wondering if this opening would make that easier to happen ...otherwise, why not have a solid tube? ...hope that's clearer? ...thanks

Perhaps easier manufacture, easier to service, less chance of the plunger getting seized, ect. I don't think that it displaces that much air when it's forced back. The stroke isn't very long. And it's not air tight, need room to operate without gumming up.
