I know this has probably been beat to death, but....

Starting to look for a compact 9mm after some years of not owning pistols (357mag, 22 auto). The reason is, I'm considering spending some major time in Brazil and would like to develop proficiency in using a smaller framed auto, I'll leave it at that. I'm picking 9mm as the ammo is global and plentiful compared to what I would prefer in .40, I'm looking for a decent quality piece in the $500 range, I realise that the trigger may need work before I even take delivery.

Considering:

IWI Baby Para $600
M&P Range Kit $528
Ruger SR9 $500
Also Glock 17 as Glock seems to have a reputation of eating anything and functioning reliably. $700

I am also open to used but well maintained units.

Glock or M&P, cheap and the controls transition from the various models across their lines. Some south American countries do not allow "military calibre weapons" so check what you would be allowed to carry there first.

Glock 17 isnt considered a compact, its their standard size 9mm frame. If you want a compact Glock 9mm you would be looking at the G19

Thanks for the replies guys.

Let me put it you this way. My wife is from northern Brazil, and for the last 5 years there has been escalating callous violence involving stolen vehicles in which case the criminal shoots you dead instead of even kicking you out of the vehicle, just this week a hitman missed his target in her town but wasn't going home with a full clip- shot her 17 year old cousin at a party once in the stomach and malfunctioned to the head twice- he survived. I don't know what's going on there and I can't speak for all southern countries but the chasm between have and have not is huge and with even more restrictive gun laws- the citizens have no protection, but the bandits have no problem getting hardware- me I'm blonde and blue eyed and that sticks out. So I want to work on my target skills, will likely not import anything to Brazil, you know, buy local;)

This is common in Europe too. It's part of the raison d'être for .380. Too bad we can't get Glock 42 up here...

If you're planning on CCW there I STRONGLY suggest you find EXACTLY what you can carry/get down there and practice with THE EXACT system up here. You need your handling and draws to be second nature.

Good luck!

Try to handle the guns before you buy them if possible, originally I wanted a Glock 19, but I ended up buying a 17 first...Now that I have both, the 17 seems to fit my hand much better, the 19 is almost too small for my hand ....I am having mods done to the 19 grip area so it fits my hand better.

So it ended up that the pistol I wanted, isnt actually the one that fits my hand best....I think I will be a much better shot with the 17 because it fits better...So the same can be said about different brands and models....

If you have a small hand a Glock 19 would be more compact then a 17 and most likely fit your hand better...Side by side the 19 is much smaller then the 17, but same caliber

Go baby Eagle, or spend 200 more and get a Glock 26-27. G19 isn't a compact

Yes it is, go on Glock's website and it is their compact model 9mm.....And if you thing a 19 inst a compact then the 17 sure inst a compact either as its bigger. And the 26-27 you suggest are "sub" compacts....

They may not be compact enough for you, or as "compacted" compared to other compacts, but as far as Glock is concerned the 17 is their standard full size frame, 19 is compact, 26 is sub compact in 9mm....

When i think of compact guns i think of G26, while the 19 is a comfy gun its not that small by any means

Then you must have baby hands, for me its almost too small....Ive never held a 26 but if its even smaller then a 19 I would need a grip extended mag for sure...As on the 19 my pinky is just barley on the gun and feels awkward on the edge. That is why I am having the frame modded so my hand can grip higher on the gun, and get a full grip on it...

Also you have to consider the Gen, as my 17 is gen4 and my 19 is gen3 and the grips are quite different...The gen4 has the back straps that can be changed out for different sizes, the gen 3 it is what it is unless you mod it..

Im new to guns and Im just learning that guns are like motorcycle helmets, just because you like how a helmet or gun looks or your favorite racer or pistol shooter uses such and such brand...Doesnt mean it will work/fit you, as we all have different sized heads, the same goes for hands, what is a small gun for someone can be huge in someone elses hands...Thats why I really suggest trying to put one in your hand before buying

If you dont care about actual fit or comfort of the gun in your hand, and just want the smallest you can buy them yes subcompact it is...Although not legal in Canada without a longer barrel
