Stopping Rifles, .375 - .450 - .505 Gibbs

This stupid thread has somehow caused me to horse trade into a 416 Rigby....not quite the same league as these "stoppers", but I'm sure a few things will "stop" when I let it off for the first time....
At least the goal of owning a +.40 is achieved, look out whitetails!!!!

You can tell your wife it was my fault! Congratulations on a true classic and being armed for anything, anywhere, anytime. I think stoppers start at .416 personally, it's in the game.

It's hard to go wrong with a .416 Rigby or a 404 Jeffrey. The 404 Jeffrey was my primary weapon last visit to the Dark Continent, and the .416 was my "backup" (2,350 and 2,400 fps with 400 gr bullets respectively).

Bottom line: The .416 is an excellent choice!

The 404J is the one I want, just can't find one that I'm willing to spend the $ on.......this one fell into my lap with one little PM sent just to inquire.....next thing you know i'm mailing boxes!!! Oh well, it's not here yet....it's hunting season anyway...I'll tinker with it in the winter

Our mutual friend in northern Alberta is on the hunt for a nice .404 too, there's something about that cartridge. I'd like one too. This said, you aren't missing anything with a Rigby in the cabinet! Get a Ruger, CZ, or a custom?

My late Brother built a really nice 404 on a P14 action for my 60th.
It took him about three years to complete as he was working full-time as a millwright in the Yukon and he worked on it when he had the time to spare.
He was for about 20 years a member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild and was noted for his exceptional stock-work as well as his metal working ability.
The rifle is superbly accurate and is very smooth functioning, although I'll never live long enough to see Africa I'm content to hunt our big game with it.
The 404 cartridge itself is easy to load and components are becoming more plentiful all the time.
As much as I wish to acquire one of the big 50 cal. rifles I'm beginning to believe that perhaps the 404 with a heavy load is at the top of my comfortable recoil threshold...

This thread needs more pics. If a new caliber is mentioned someone must post a picture of the rifle! This in turn causes us to feel unwell until we ourselves buy said caliber of rifle.

Just to stir the pot, Profit River has a CZ 550 in .505 Gibbs for sale under their consignment guns. Its a steal too, only a tenth of the price they want for a Cogswell and Harrison .470 double rifle.:stirthepot2:
