DA556 20" - The A1 brought up to speed - Update on post 1

I had to custom build my A1 from scratch.
I have the 1:12 pencil barrel.
If these were available at the time I would have just bought one and been done with it lol

I prefer the A1 sights as well. The weight is unbelievably light, the rifle is extremely well balanced and it shoots very accurate for a light weight gas fed battle rifle.
I love's my A1 but if the day comes where I can find a 1:9 pencil barrel, I will swap it out.

I wouldn't have minded so much but the apertures were noticeably drilled off to the left. I'm sure it worked, but it was very strange to look through. This may have been intentional, as it shot right, particularly with AE ammo, and I had to crank the new, centered apertures pretty far left. As I broke the barrel in, my groups slowly started to "center" themselves, and I was able to ease off on the sights a bit. Whatever, it works!

The weight difference is astounding. The entire rifle feels like it weighs similar to a stripped 16" gov't profile upper on it's own, and the balance blows it out of the water. With a hammer forged barrel I wouldn't be worrying about stringing (even without our mag caps!)

I'm sure the 1:12 barrels will sell for those making true A1 clones, but for those more interested in a rifle that will eat anything you feed it, as you can see, the 1:9 barrel's accuracy is nothing to sneeze at. I bet they'd sell like hotcakes.

One of the apertures is supposed to be for zeroing on a shorter range, 25 meters or something. I wonder if the Norinco is like that too.

I've actually never heard if that! I wonder if thats how the original armalites were set up, I read somewhere that the Army complained about a lack of night shooting capability with the prototype M16s, which may have lead to the introduction of the large aperture.

The DA556 manual states that one is for 0-300m, the other is for 300-500. One aperture is elevated higher than the other, so I can see it working.

I not sure if you know or not but lever arms is selling norinco 20 inchers with a removable carry handles for a 100$ more.

X2! they have a 1/9 twist barrel too. Mine is a absolute tack driver since i swapped out the trigger , actually more accurate than my Colt 20'' 1/7 with most 55 to 62 grain ammo. These Norc ARs seem to have really good barrels in my experience , both my 14.5 and 20 are as accurate as any high end US made AR i have fired or owned once you put a better trigger group in .

Yeah, that flat top is definitely appealing, and it may even have a desirable triangular cap.

My priority was the pencil barrel. I love shooting irons, so the fixed sights were fine by me, but a flat top would be optimal.
 
Those lever 20" ar's look great!
Maybe I have to sell my 14.5 and pick one up

All sights, regardless of manufacture, will have one of them offset. As you flip the sight it physically moves along windage screw and the aperture must be offset to compensate.
 
I was referring to vertical offset. There was horizontal offset as well but it was too extreme for just flip compensation.
