I just ordered myself a vanguard S2 in 257 weatherby for my new deer rig. I'm wondering what you all are using or would recommend for a scope. I have about $500 to spend and I was thinking something in the 4-12 or 4.5-14 range. Any help or recommendations?

Too much scope. Mine wears a 1.5-5x Leupold. I think the happy medium lies somewhere in between.

Mine wears that 3-12 Bushnell 30mm with the illuminated reticle. Can't remember what line it is.... But it's as high as you can go without having to adjust parallax... Which is retarded in a hunting rifle. And 3 is good and low. Unless you are bush hunting, then Big Ugly Man has the best suggestion, as anything higher is dumb. Good luck with the cartridge.... I throw 75grn out at just under 4000. It's like hitting deer with lightning. I've never had them take a step, and it's flat to 400....

It's a weird one that can be hard to find. It's not a North American offering normally, as they built it for Europe, but it can be found around here. It's not even on Bushnells NA site. But no parallax, 3-12 zoom, mines very clear, 30mm tube, 56mm Bell. I bought it as a cheap placement to later be replaced on my Blaser R93 but it works so well and is so clear, I just kept it. Like Ford, Bushnell sells better stuff in Europe...

I've had fixed 6 FX3, 3.5-10 x 40 VX111, 4.5-14 x 40 VX3, 4.5-14 x40 LR and 4.5-14 x 50 VX3. Some had B&C reticles, some didn't. The overall conclusion was that it doesn't matter much which scope we wander around deer hunting with it set on 6 power. The 14 powers are nice for longer shots on deer and esp coyotes. Good at the range for smacking gongs too.
In your price range I'd pick up a 4-12 VX2 with LR reticle. You'll have to shop hard to make your $ range but it can be done.

That's just not enough for me. This will see some use as a longer range coyote gun so I want a little extra over the usual 3-9 on my old deer rifle. I probably live in one of the flattest areas of Canada so sometime long shots are necessary.
A 4-12 was my original choice but there doesn't seem to be much out there in that range. I have a vx1 4-12 on a 22-250 and it's decent but I was hoping for slightly better glass. I know there's a vortex viper 4-12 that's in the price range but not sure if it's good. I was recommended a Zeiss terra 4-12 but I'm completely unfamiliar with them.
I think the sightron s2 4-16 is in your price range. The vortex hs-t is another good choice. I also like the Leupold VX-3 range of scopes. I'm sure you will likely get a better opinion from someone more qualified to answer than myself though.
I just put a Vortex Viper 4-12x40 PA on my .257 Wby yesterday. For general hunting purposes it will probably not be set over 6x, however, for long-range varmints the extra magnification will be handy.

Remember, at 400 yards and looking through 10x glass it's like shooting 40 yards over irons (except easier - single focal plane). While it might be tempting to scope the Bee with enough power to see the rings around Uranus, 10x is probably lots and you should be able to find a gently used 3.5-10x Leupold in your price range fairly easily The only reason the 1.5-5x is on mine is that I had it lying around as a spare for my 416 when the Bee came to live with me.
