American Eagle 7.62 Ammuntion for M305

Looking to purchase affordable [laughable] 308/7.62 ammunition for the M305 that will be re-loadable. Some have suggested avoiding American Eagle 7.62 and I was wondering what the problem was with this ammunition. I have shot about 40 rounds of American Eagle 7.62 and dropped the spent cases in a 308 case gauge and it looks like a bit of ballooning going on as the rims stick up about 1/4 to 3/8ths of an inch. I guess this means lots of lube to size those cases if I can ever find small base dies for the 308 or someone may suggest not to reload to to haedspace issues.

Anyway if someone can please recommend a brand of brass that a guy can reload a few times or ammunition that is re-loadable that would be really appreciated. But then again maybe someone will suggest the headspace is too much after firing the round to consider reloading.

S&B .308 Win is Amazing plinking ammo for the M14S/M1A rifle. Its very good quality actually, very clean looking, reloadable, 147 gr. FMJ around $12 a box, great price for .308 Win ammo.
 
AE 150 grain FMJ is very accurate in my experience, 0.5 to 1 inch groups at 100 yards. The 240 round ammo can for $199.00 was a good deal when many places seemed to have it in stock.
 
Finally picked up small base dies for the 308 and after resizing with a bit of effort the brass dropped right into the case gauge. So I'm happy about that. but the hunt continues for brass or Federal 7.62.
 
American eagle ammunition goes no where near my m14 rifles based on personal experience and similar experiences reported elsewhere in these rifles.
Avoiding it as M14 ammo would be wise.

Would you mind ellaborating a bit? Are you talking about AE that has FC cases?

I just bought 1000 rounds of AE 149gr which is LC 13 cased, I was out shooting it yesterday and it shot really well! Was able to put 2 on the 675y 12" gong out of 10 with irons :cool: (bone stock older 305 with 1.634" headspace)

Hit the 10" at 300 and 525y 2-3 times out of 5 shots sitting position and it all functioned without a hicup.

I'll run a few through the case gauge and see whats up, but why is AE bad ammo for the 14?

Just ran a handful through the gauge, they all dropped right in and I confirmed my headsapce while I was at it.
No issues here, but again I have LC cased AE.
 
not a big fan of fed brass, its to damn soft. it elongates very quickly and has a short life span for reloading. On .308 i was finding it would elongate at the neck as much as 12 thou a firing, I would trim it back to 2.005 and still have to trim it the next reload because it was over 2.015

on .223 i had case head separation with AE with the factory load.
 
federal power shok has never given me issues, I've fired 1000's of rounds in m305's and the higher end rifles.
as far as I understand, American eagle brand doesn't use the same brass as federals premium ammo
AE is the only ammo I've ever needed a broken case extractor for in my sks and m14 rifles
and before anyone blames Chinese chambers/headspace......
my near catastrophies were not in Chinese chambers. one was a early springfield divine marked NM barrel with match chamber
other was in a USGi barrel and match chamber. (Chinese receivers only)
on first firings, not reloads, split necks, ruptured cases and .308 cases going in, what looks like a .45acp case getting ejected...... not good
so I just stay away from the stuff on the assumption that the AE brand uses crappy , thin or brittle brass ;)
from what I've seen over the years that's been posted by others, seems I'm not the only one.
I have test fired every rifle I've worked on in the past decade with federal 150gr power shok factory ammunition at 26bucks a box, from out of the cosmo norincos, to Krieger barrelled LRB M25's and nearly everything in between (of what's available in Canada anyways) and not one single hiccup or failure to perform as it should.

I've used tons of AE in 45acp with no issue and I have zero issues putty AE in my bolt gun, but I don't trust it at all in semi auto actions.

I wasn't too concerned with my LC cased AE but this helps!
I'm now gonna go sort through my once fired mixed brass bucket and toss all the federal stuff tho!
