I'd like a precision 1-9x (in that range) AR scope with a really nice target turret.
I don't care for illumination. I just want something that tracks like it's supposed to, isn't a glorified red dot sight, with a nice fine cross hair reticle.
I have a nice AR with a true free floating barrel and like most of us, all I shoot is paper :)
I'd like to reach out to 300 yards and hit a gong on occasion with some luck

Any ideas?

A gong at 300 is doable with a reddot, you don't need 9x magnification to do it.

With your above criteria, your options are vast. What kind of budget, what kind of adjustments(mil or moa). 30mm tube, 34mm, 1"? FFP or SFP, adjustable objective?

Lots of missing blanks. And why a fine crosshair? That reticle is very much outdated and near useless.

I have a Leupold 3-9x40 Mark AR Mod 1 which has a nice mildot reticle and a BDC elevation turret which has ranging out to 600 yards. Glass is nice for a $400 scope.
I would probably go with a Sightron 1-7, either the SIII or the new S-Tac series if you want something that can go down to 1x but offers a little more than the typical 1-4x scopes out there. Sightron has some really nice glass.

Cr5:

Thanks! That sightron sIII is exactly what I wanted.
It's reviewed very well across the board.

The Vortex Razor 1-6 is also a nice scope but it's quite spendy.
Leupold also makes a VX-6 series in a 1-6 power but once again it's very expensive and I doubt it's got any better glass than the Sightron.

Contact Jerry at Mystic Precision, I bought my Sightron SIII 6-24 from him and he is great to deal with and the scope was in my hands within a week of payment. Hirsch Precision and Alberta Tactical Rifle are two other site sponsors that sell Sightron.

Hey I was looking at the same scope, if illuminated, how well does it work close up? 50 yards and closer'ish? Can you do the both eyes open shooting thing with the illuminated reticle?

Are you asking about the Leupold I own or the sightron I don't?
The leupold 3-9 is fine as close as 25 yards without any problems. I've never shot it at less than that.
Everything I've read about the Sightron 1-7 says it's a true 1x so both eyes open is no problem. Will probably be the next optic I buy.

The Leupold I was asking about. How is the glass and the capabilities beyond say 200yards with it on a longer barreled AR, say 16" or greater (guessing that's what you have)?

I Have a DD M4LW, with the Leupold Mark Ar 3-9 and have had no issues reaching out to far distances. 300 yrd gong was 5/5 hits, 400 went 3/5

I have it on my non restricted ACR. I haven't tried shooting it beyond 300 yards but the glass is very good for a $400 scope. Not as good as my Nightforce or Trijicon but still very good.

Bug buster? Why?

Why they came up with that name? Dunno. Maybe cuz you can shoot a fly laying on the target, lol

Here's a pic on a AR
