If you know your SKS's you will know that the optic in said picture is useless by way of it's mounting.

Most SKS owners will shoot there SKS a lot, ammo is cheap. There is no reason why an amateur shooter can't practice enough to drop a deer at a 100yards.

Great chart. Shows the 7.62x39 round at 175 yards is about 4" low. Well within the kill zone of a deer. Treat it like a 30-30 and go kill deer out to about 150 yards, and still have a margin for error.

I will speak for myself.
My SKS groups 8 to 12" at 100m from a bench (yes, it's scoped).
I've witnessed quite a few other SKS' exhibiting the same "patterns" (can't call them groups).
Therefore a 4" drop means nothing and the deer's vitals are hit or most likely miss in a hunting situation.
That's why I don't consider an SKS a hunting rifle.
For the military where hitting a human in the pinky is a hit they might have worked well.
Perhaps you had one of those rare accurate ones but I have yet to see one.

Get a different one. Just cause a few SKSes are inaccurate, doesn't mean they all are.

:D I'm not rich enough to buy guns at full price and sell them for peanuts because they suck.

He's shooting surplus. Some light mods and some tuning he managed MOA suitable for hunting.

If your SKS is horribly inaccurate, then don't hunt with it. This guy ^^^^ can hunt with his SKS.

So... why spew crap about the SKS being unacceptable for hunting? It's the luck of the draw my friend.

I respectfully disagree. That one you posted is one group.
Read the whole thread and see for yourself. I'm seeing many 8"+ groups. That's what that rifle is really capable of.
And his SKS is scoped too.

edit: I once shot 3 bullets one after the other in a slightly elongated hole from my MOA 30-06. Does that suddenly make the rifle a 0.25MOA rifle? I would say nope.
 
I don't think any of the 6 or 7 sks rifles I have owned are anything exceptional. I've never done extensive bench shooting with them as I don't see the point in getting hung up on group size. More important is if it will hit a kill zone of whatever you are hunting with it. And all of them seemed to be able to do that when given decent ammunition.

I did see a wide variation in accuracy depending on ammunition used though. Most SKS's burn up crates of surplus stuff, and it's not anywhere near as accurate as any of the hunting grade ammunition.

I read the thread. The stock had some play that caused inconsistent POI. He shimmed it and fixed the problem. I suggest you read it again thoroughly (with an open mind)

I do get your point and don't deny some SKS' are good enough for hunting.
But I see it as unethical to go hunting with a gun that's typically not accurate at all.
Of course, under 50yds even a shotgun works but that's not the typical distance where I hunt.
My 357mag rifle groups 2" at 100m and I seldom hunt with it.
 
I am glad it has been stated that said targets were shot with Surplus FMJ, rather than hunting loads. I have 4 SKS's 2 Chinese one Russian and a Yugo, in my wife's hands the Chinese will better the Yugo in my hands. This to me means that it is first know your gun and it's capabilities, then decide if it is ethical to hunt with said gun, then get your five groups if you feel five groups is enough.

It is true not everyone can afford a expensive hunting rifle, when I first started hunting I used a milsurp enfield with Iron sights and I took a few moose at a hundred yards, or what I thought was more like 200 at the time.

Buy Gun
Learn gun
Sight in with hunting loads
Hunt with gun inside a hundred yards
Eat venison all winter

YOURS is an 8+ MOA.. that does not mean that everyone else's is.. I've gotten 4" group cold bore (first 4 shots, several times at the range).. which is what I would consider fine for hunting a deer at 50-100 yards (which is where I use MY SKS on my stand)..

MY SKS is good.. and that's all that matters since I'm not shooting yours..

Several 4" groups in a year is not good enough for me. It has to be every time I shoot cold bore to qualify.
And even so, you can't say SKSes are good for hunting but rather mine is.
As it stands, all copies I've seen are not accurate enough.
Could be that current batches are worse than old ones? I don't know.

I absolutely can say that mine is good for hunting.. if you don't think YOURS is good, then thats only YOUR rifle under YOUR conditions.. it does not mean that every SKS is not good for hunting..

I know of 6 that I've seen guys purchase, only one was all over the place, and he got rid of it for a better one ($30 difference between when he sold the old and bought the new.. so you can't say that it's an expensive gun to "Fix" if it shoots bad..)
