Canada, U.S. tribes sign treaty to restore bison to Great Plains

Well, it seems like everyone thinks they'll be more trouble than they're worth, so I'll have to take the word of you folks who live out there over my (preconceived)notions from over here.

Parks Canada did their damnedest to sell the idea to the Sundre Fish and Game association. Even got them to agree to be stewards of the proposed Red Deer River herd at a poorly attended meeting. when word got out, it was quickly kiboshed at the next, much better, attended meeting. ;) Stupid idea being pushed by a small hand full of romantics spearheaded by the Whyte foundation.

From what I've seen Indians can't keep a cow or horse contained, buffalo..... Not a chance in hell

Keep in mind that the tribes involved directly control 6.4 million acres. Add another million and a bit for Glacier and Waterton Parks and millions more acres of BLM land.

He had an Indian reserve raising buffalo a short distance from where I live until all the BSE scare happened a few years ago and the price bottomed out on them. They basically opened the gates and released them into the wild. They would roam where ever they wanted to and ordinary pasture fences would not keep them out. When the farmers call DNR for help they were told it was not a DNR problem as they were not a game animal. They were told if the buffalo were destroying property they had every right to dispose of them. We would ride in a hay wagon behind the tractor and shoot buffalo when the farmer would go out to feed his cows as the buffalo were at the feeders and keeping the cows from eating. After a short while the buffalo got smarter and they would take off when they heard the tractor coming. They did get rid of the rest of the heard by baiting them into corrals but not after they caused a bunch of damage for the farmers to repair at their own expense.

Holy chit. Moose are hard on crops, I can't imagine what a few buffalo would do. They appear to be a hearty animal, requiring little care in the domestic situation, where they have good fencing, but in general rural areas?
They would be a great hunting opportunity...fill your freezer in one hunt, but the effects to agriculture and auto collisions is certainly a concern. Deer bounce of semi's like gophers, moose less so, big bull bison...not so much.

Sounds like Ted Turner can do it all by himself. ;) "Second largest land owner in America".

I don't mind buffalo, but find that it needs a long slow cooking as compared to the beef my family raises... Good think I love smoking meat...

That being said, buffalo will go where they please and they'll migrate, and destroy property... And they will be shot as a pest animal again... Like they were 150 years ago...

Bison is better than beef, eaten enormous amounts of it and every time I have to take beef, I notice.

Most all were not shot because they were pests , they were hunted on a commercial scale for their hide and meat..

I only ate buffalo a few times, I thought it was tastier than beef.

Proper fencing will contain them, reintroduction is a great idea...hope it is successful!
