Me, the rifle, or the ammo?

Hi Everyone,

I have a CZ 452 Varmint in 22LR that seems to have an issue (see above) that I can't quite figure out. I started out with CCI SV and it really didnt like that so I picked up some SK Standard Plus and then SK Subsonic more recently.

Both of the SK rounds shoot very well at 50 yards (let us just call this a one holer for fun - maybe not a .22 sized hole but it looks like a bigger hole) with the exception of 1 round for every 5 shot group. The thing that is frustrating me is that the "flier" (issue could be me) is completely random. It can be in any position around the regular group (above, below, to the sides, etc.) and any of the shots in the group. I have had the first round be an inch high and then the next 4 settle down into a nice group. For those who may not know the CZ 452 varmint is different from the other CZs as it has one action screw and one barrel nut, this might be a contributing factor.

Thanks for any assistance.

I've had better results with the Remington Rifle match or the Eley Practice then I did with the Lapua SK Standard, even the CCI Green Tag did better for me. What is your trigger like? I know my "flyer count" went way down after installing a YoDave kit and dropping my trigger pull down.

22's are made to git cussed at.

Yup.

Beyond that, keep trying different ammo. Grab a box (or two) of Eley target solids, and see what you can do with that. Remember it generally takes 5-10 rounds of a new ammo for the barrel to "settle" in on it - don't ask me why, just something I've both read and observed.

I keep a cigar box full of 1 or two boxes of a wide variety of different ammo I only break out for a new .22 that I really want to get a sense of (so, maybe once or twice a year). Basic strategy is to fire 10 rounds of a given ammo to get a basic zero and to settle the barrel on the ammo, then take a 5 shot, really concentrated group with it. Go through 7 or 8 different types of ammo, then repeat the process with the top 2 or 3.

It's can be a full (fun) day at the range just figuring out what ammo your rifle likes. Your biggest problem right now is the lack of availability of some .22 - specifically CCI. There are better .22 rounds out there, but in general, the CCI ammo is a good mid point for quality/price. Mini mag (RN) can do really well in some rifles. But you never know, some rifles do best on cheap crap ammo. If I ever end up owning such a unicorn gun, it will go with me to the grave.

Doubtful it's the rifle that's causing the problem. In a .22, more often a single flyer out of a group is either the ammo or the trigger finger.
