Transplant SR22 action from OEM Ruger SR22 chassis to a different stock or not?

Hi All,

I have an SR-22 rifle that I'm just not digging much. Yes, it looks cool, and I like the accuracy of the thicker SR22 barrel (.720" or something like that, I know its heavier than a stock 10/22 barrel but not a bull barrel), but I think the AR-style chassis and hand guard are just too heavy. Plus, I just can't stand the look of banana-style magazines in an SR22, and I've read that all the AR-lookalike magazines available are crap (Pro-Mag, Battledyne, etc).

So, should I:

1) Sell the SR-22 and start with a 10/22 and mod it the way I want?

or

2) Remove the SR-22 from its chassis, and install the barrel and action into a different stock? Maybe an Blackhawk Axiom or Tapco Intrafuse?

Someone else wrote a similar thread about doing this once, and the consensus on that thread was to sell the SR22 instead of gutting it. Just wondering if that is still the better way to go? Here's the old thread:

I stripped the barrelled action and trigger group out of my SR-22 and put them in a refinished birch stock that I picked up at a LGS. I used a chunk of dowel and some sandpaper to enlarge the barrel channel, and a sander to smooth out the cut-out for the barrel band. I wanted it to have irons so I added a set of tech sights as well (had to get a gunsmith to dovetail the barrel). I've had it like this for a couple of years now and it's an absolute joy to carry around with it's short barrel and light weight.

Here's the result (there's an AR flash hider on it in the picture, but I usually just put the thread protector on the end):

Nice gun - I like it! I like the look of the Tech sights, but would probably go with an optic instead. What are you using to tie the two 10/22 mags together? Is that the Tandemkross unit?

Thanks! I used something like these http://www.hawktecharms.com/10-22-Dual-Magazine-Holder-p/elm-dmh.htm which I needed to epoxy into place. I just looked up the Tandemkross unit though, and if I were going to do it again I'd definitely go with those - way better design.

Well, here's an update to my old thread.

Went to the extremely-crowded gun show at Thornecliff Community Centre in Calgary on Saturday and behold I found a nice older 10/22 wood stock which I picked up for $15. I figure its cheap enough that if I don't like it, I'm not out much money.

So Mr. Pop, you inspired me to try what you did...or somewhat close. I'm probably not going to put the Tech sights on like yours. I'm not interested in doing anything to my SR22 yet that can't be undone such as dovetailing the barrel. I'll sand down the stock, find some dowel to open up the barrel channel, then probably repaint the entire stock flat black. Then its a simple matter of dropping in the barrel, receiver and trigger group, mounting a rail on top, and putting my Strikefire RDS on top.

Curious about how you managed to get your stock so smooth that the groove for the barrel band appears to be completely gone. The groove is quite pronounced on my wood stock, so its going to take LOTS of sanding to make it disappear.

That's an interesting swirly grain in that stock, it'll be nice to see how it looks stripped and sanded down. For the barrel band groove I just went over it again and again until I'd smoothed it away - it took a LOT of sanding

if you want to sell the SR22 parts minus the rail, sights, sling and optic, for a reasonable price let me know.

If you have a socket set just use a socket that is a little smaller than the barrel and wrap it in sandpaper to enlarge the barrel channel. More sizes available than dowels so you can get it just right. Deep sockets are best but normal size work fine also. If you don't want the barrel band just cut it off and re-round the end, way easier than trying to sand the whole thing flush.

Thanks for all the interest in my SR22 parts. Not quite ready to part with them just yet - I like having the option of re-assembling the gun back to original if I want to. This new stock is just an experiment for me. I might like it or I might not, but I won't know until I try it!
