Hey gang…

I recently acquired a early model Browning auto 5 shotgun. I was planning on making it into a short-barreled project gun. Upon more detail examination, I found that it is a short magazine model. Looks like it will accommodate three shells instead of the usual Auto 5 four.

What I am looking to find out is the rarity of such a gun… I don't want to start chopping it up and find out that it is rare or collectible.

So, if you browning guys could chip in some information, that would be great!

With regard to the date of manufacture, it falls into the "unknown zone" number range that I found online… The year range given was 1902–1939.

Thanks'

Are you sure you simply don't have a dent in the mag tube restricting the loading of 4 rounds? Measure the mag length vs the length of 4 rounds.

Browning introduced the 3-shot (2 in the magazine, 1 in the chamber) model in 1932. Your forearm should be stamped "Browning 3 shot". During it's production until '47, the price was the same as the 5 shot model, so it was discontinued.

Personally, I wouldn't hack on a 3 shot model as it's obviously a rarer model. I'd guess the value would be higher, but I can't say how much.

Yes, it's a valuable gun. That's a pretty decent looking gun that doesn't deserve to be chopped up. Sell it and pick up a real junker, they're out there. Find one with rusty/worn bluing and that 'custom' carving that some people like to hack into their guns.
