I was wondering if any body is using one and their opions of it. Caliber would be 4570. Other question is this rifle be able to mount a scope on it. Next question is it able to shoot 4-10 shells out of it and able to extract the shells
Thanks for the time

I like the idea and WILL own one down the road. (possibly in .30-06 also, as they chambered both). I hear that they are certainly serviceable, and rugged enough. Accuracy is going to be a "trial" as they will be fun to find a load that will regulate. The normal way of regulating the barrels is not employed with this gun. There is a fixed barrel, and a second movable barrel that moves the POI by way of a Jackscrew. I always wanted a "non-shotgun" double that could plug 2 fast hardcast lead pills into a big ol' bear. Maybe not too "frilly around the edges" but I don't worry about that Nancy boy stuff anyhow. Unsure of the 410 extraction, but with a rifled barrel, I would wonder if your shot patterns would be worth anything. I would be curious to know if 410 slug rounds would work though..................

Why would one worry about a 410 slug round....when the 45-70 round would be more effective.

As for using 410...try looking up foraging rounds on you tube. Basically take a 45-70 brass, some trail boss, a 410 wad with #8 shot and seal it with gasket rubber or parafin wax. The barrel being rifled makes it a short range round only....30 ft. Enough to take a grouse or bunny in a pinch.

Just curious about the 410 slug. Not everyone reloads, and unless you have a gun store locally to you, 410 slugs may be far easier to get (walmart etc) and just good to know to increase the utility of the gun for others.
I reload, and have access to factory 45-70 ammo locally, so it was just a "wonder or thought" as to if a slug would work. I personally wouldn't bother, but I'm not everyone. Someone , somewhere would want to know and certainly will probably try it, so I am curious.

I love mine. Yes you can mount a scope. Yes extraction is great even when the barrels are burning your hand. Yes 410 shot and slugs work you need a dowel or knife to extract them as th extractors miss the rim. Mine is very accurate and up consistent. I've used it on bear and it's a joy to carry through thick bush. The triggers are stiff but break well. For the money they are well worth it. The rail is 11 mm. So use an air gun mount and it won't move even when pushing 405 gr loads to 2000 fps. Recoil becomes brutal at that speed. I load 405 hard cast at 1550/1600 fps and it's a joy to shoot

You have fired a 410 shotshell thru your 45/70 rifle and it works ?

For the price, you can't beat the Baikal 221 as it is built like a T-34. It's accurate for the intended purpose of plopping big critters in tight cover out to 75 yds. Not a pretentious layout, but a good, solid workin' folks rifle that is user adjustable in regulation of the barrels like a Merkel SxS, but far more affordable.

I'm getting tempted.;)

Yes. The rifling throws a horrible pattern however
Th baikal is truly a great rifle for the price. With factory rem express 405 gr jacketed soft points it groups 2 shots from each barrel under 2" at 75 yards.
My loads are faster and it caused vertical spreading of 3" at 50 yards. Both barrels dead center. I set th scope for the front trigger and it's good to a 100 yards. The other barrel printing higher is perfect for 150 yard shot using my cross hairs. I decided to leave it this way in case of a longer shot. When baiting bears 12 clicks down brings it 1.5" below and 1.5" above at 50 yards for snap shooting center mass its perfect. At 20 yards the holes just over lap the bullseye.

Noone who has shot mine has complained since I started loading it at 1550/1600 fps. It's a great range gun and a great bush gun. I won't cry when it gets scratched
Going into bear baits in the thick bush it adds a level of comfort. I use a baikal ij58 sxs 12 ga as well so they swing much the same

I have a couple of them and for what they cost hard to beat as an entry level double.
Accuracy is decent enough to get the job done @ 100 yards.
Easy to mount optics on the 11 mm rail.
