I was hunting pheasant yesterday with my regular partner in crazy 50-65 km winds and ran into the stupidest road hunter it has been my misfortune to meet. We had hunted a draw for 1.5 km with roosters running ahead and my dog resetting his points several times with only one in the bag. We are about 80m from the trail the draw ends at when my dog goes on point. A grey half ton slows down and the idiot gets out and loads his gun!!!!!!! My buddy is in the cattails possibly out of sight but I am completely visible wearing orange so I scream at him not to shoot if a bird flushes and to get the *%%$ out of there. Just then two birds flush one towards my partner and one towards me, I can't shoot for fear of hitting the idiot and neither can my buddy. I start running towards his truck to give him hell and he bravely jumps in and peels away. ARGGGGHHH.

In order to avoid road hunters I avoid roads. But I guess in your situation it was unavoidable. At least the moron never fired. I've had an idiot fire straight at me when a bird flushed. Luckily I was far enough away not to be hurt. I just got tagged by a couple of pellets.
In Sask this year rather than limit tags the brainiacs limited the rifle season to just two weeks leaving every slob road hunter only two weekends to go out. It is going to be road hunter hell and I will avoid it like the plague.

If in the brush and a shot is fired in your direction, would it not be considered self defense to return a shell to the other guy? If someone pointed the open end of a firearm at me and it went boom, I would be fearful for my life

Luther Marsh near Mount Forest Ontario, head to toe in blaze orange, still got tagged when an idiot fired straight at me when a pheasant flushed - 20 yards between us, no blood because I ducked and heavy clothing....left Ontario for Alberta the next spring and will never go back. They make a sizzling sound when they go by your ear!

I don't even know where to go with what you just said.
Not defending the road hunter at all but to willingly escalate a really dumb move into purposely shooting to kill another human being is the single stupidist thing I've read here in a long time.
This is not the same as someone breaking into your house in the middle of the night.

I guess I should clarify a bit. I was standing on a summer fallow field as the bonehead flushed a bird. The bird flew straight at me. He was so excited that he opened up on the bird. Yes the thought crossed my mind to reciprocate but I absolutely would not do that in that situation as it was no where near a self defence situation. I did have a little chat (to put it mildly ) with the fellow and he said I should not of been standing there. Considering I had been hunting that patch with some friends I got a wee bit upset with the felow. He wisely walked back to his truck and left.

Firing a shot could be a pretty effective way of letting someone know there is a person where you are, since the animals don't have guns. But firing at someone in self-defence is only justified if you have reasonable grounds to believe they were trying to shoot you.

Yeah the rifle season is gonna be hell! I've been out with the Ml and really haven't seen many deer compared to past seasons in my area.

You should have called the police and gave them a description of him.

I know what you mean. I scouted a fair bit. I sat for archery just one evening and only saw a doe feeding In the ditch on the drive home. I went opening day ML and saw one deer. Luckily it was a nice 4x4 and it is in my freezer now so I'm tagged out. I hope I can find a buck for junior but we are going to avoid weekends by going out evenings after work. Also, I avoid the popular areas by focusing on small areas in obscure places. Maybe not as many deer but we only need one and flying bullets from road warriors makes me a little twitchy.

I bet you're that guy that grabs a gun everytime he hears a noise at night, you're the "I wish a mother ####er would" guy.

Healthy does, yearlings and fawns in my area, average numbers.

Let a doe and yearling go this morning, was the first trip in the stand, but yeah, come November the war will start and I feel I will be kicking rifle hunters out of my stand that wander in OR drive in with their $300.00 blazer thinking they will "spook" one up and get a shot.

My ring of family calls them road trolls we call road hunters the people that willfully hit things with their trucks or cars.

Morons either way...

I've never hunted roads. What calibre is most effective and how the hell do you clean and dress them?

You want a very flat shooting round. Lol

All this said however, There is not really a problem if a fellow wants to drive on trails or back roads looking for an opportunity as long as it it done legally and respectfully to others. It provides older hunters of those who can't get around an opportunity to get out. It's not the most effective way to hunt by any means and we all decide what is best for us but I think like a lot of things it is the few morons that ruin it for everyone.
