Just curious for those who have tried the specter dr, would you use it for hunting? I've never looked through one so can't see if the clarity would be good enough to be able to count tines in zones where that is required at any distance. If you would use it for hunting any preference between the 1-4 and the 1.5x6 and why?

I've read many articles reviewing the two themselves, but the discussion focuses more around CQB which in my eyes is more of whether or not you can hit a man sized target at various ranges rather than just hitting vitals, but maybe my interpretation of that is way off.

I doubt your gonna see many guys use a spectre Dr for hunting, great optic for what its designed for but most guys hunt with bolt guns and traditionally use a 3-9 if not more power. Ive handled and looked at one to mount on my Tavor but for my hunting trips I prefer a nice optic like a Zeiss or Swarovski in a 3.5-10 power. Im in southern Saskatchewan and longer shots happen more often then not.
What gun are you planning on putting it?

Planning on putting it on an XCR or Tavor. Definitely not like most guys.. I like to try new options and think out of the box. Sometimes it works sometimes not :p

For those 2 rifles I doubt you could do better. Both are not long range guns, 4x would be perfect out to 200 yards. I read somewhere that 90% of shots taken in a hunting season are under 100 yards. That Spectre is so nice on Tavors....like it was made for them. I plan on putting one on my Tavor...when I win the lotto :)
Make sure you post some pics of your hunting trip with it on your xcr or tavor...it pisses off the fudds who think they are only good for the military.

Cheers!!

ditto. I'd probably put it on other guns also (including, but definitely not limited to bolt guns) but really just curious as to its limitations. Obvious its not developed for clover leafing rounds at distance and more of a ~2moa optic but can the detail be seen at further distances beyond 200m when not focused on the reticle. and just looking through the glass?

I guess since the gun it would be put on was brought up, are there any guns in particular it would be bad on?

Is it wise spending $2000 on a scope that's designed for 14.5" barreled 5.56mm rifles shooting 55 grain FMJ rounds and using it for hunting?

Hunting season generally is 2-3 weeks out of an entire year. The Spectre DR can be used all year from 3 gun comps, varmint shooting, range use ect...I think it would be a great way to spend $2000 cause you would use it all the time and its a quality optic.

The only thing that's keeping me away is the bdc reticle. I hate caliber specific reticles. If you want to use it on anything but the rifle and round it's designed for then it's useless. If they made a standard mil based reticle I would be all over it, then I just have to know the holds for my specific setup.
If its going to be on just a rifle for that caliber then it's your $$$.

Mines set up for 62. Grain

I've been using a 1-4 dr hunting for a while, rapid sighting, best I've used for hunting yet.
I like em so much I've got one in 7.62 as well.
Just a very good investment for me, rock solid, and as Scott_R stated I use them all year.

It's a great optic that you should like.

The proprietary mount is rather high. Designed for the AR where the rail is barely higher than the cheek rest. So the DR would sit too high on a typical bolt action. For the XCR if you have the early fixed skeleton stock you may need a cheek riser.

The best power (1-4 / 1.5-6) depends on your hunting/shooting area. Will you shoot 0-300m or 30-450m? Will you shoot past 250m often enough to justify the added bulk?

It would be great for hunting. My main hunting rifle sports a Zeiss 3.5-10 and for 99% of the time, it is set at 3.5.

I find the same is true with my hunting rifles. If I have a 2-10x, it's set on 2x. If I have a 3-9x, it's set to 3. I am hunting in brush in Eastern Ontario where the longest shot you get is 100 yards across a beaver pond, so guys out West may have a different philosophy.
