Grouse

Yeah I need a good hunting dog, we brought my buddies german Shepard. He's an awesome dog and was good for scaring them into the trees but after that he just loves to chase cows...

Finally heading up to the line tomorrow for the weekend. Do some scouting and hunt some ruffies. There's a healthy population so shouldn't have a problem taking a few in my travels.

Been out 4 times this season and have not seen a damn bird. Twice it has been sort of spitting rain but still, last year they seemed to be everywhere down here...

Maybe I'm just unlucky. Everyone else seems to be doing really well.

You're not alone. I've been out several times already and have seen exactly 2 birds. This year is shaping up to be a rerun of last year's buy gas, drive, walk, see nothing, repeat.

gone out once, connected on first bird, had one no shot due to dogs proximity, one miss, than another no shot as the bird took of behind me before I could turn around :(, and than another miss cause I didn't read the dogs body language correctly :( lesson learned though, off again on Tuesday, hope we can bag the limit

Well ended up just going up to the line for the day on Saturday. Came home with ten birds, a combo of ruffles and sharpies. Shot all but one with the 22. The one was shot with the 12ga and it worked nicely if not a touch messy. Yesterday I picked up a 20ga 870 to be my dedicated grouse gun. I'd stick to the 22 if it weren't for a few birds I've missed due to them being behind branches. The shotgun will take care of those birds. So all on all it was a perfect day hunting woods chickens.

I shoot a 20ga 870 for grouse and find it's worked well for me. Usually shooting 7 1/2s sometimes dropping to 5 or 6 depending on cover and distance. I do like when they hide behind the tree trunk. They'll poke their head around to take a peek sooner or later. Perfect shot, no damage to the meat.

went out again today, for some reason early mornings and noon is time I see least of the birds. But we did manage to get within 20-30 yards of bull moose :) my jaw dropped, Hunter got on his hind legs like a mercat to see better over the bush, we were walking with the wind so it was completely unexpected. Flashed two birds and saw another, no shot on all of them, but what a day in the bush

Slightly west of down east here, got an easy shot on a grouse and darned if it wasn't a Spruce Grouse, the first of its kind I've seen in the area. This bird would very likely would have created a sensation in the local birding world, that is if I'd noticed the species and not shot it. Oh well, they taste the same as ruffies and now it's too late for it to be anything but lead seasoned dinner.

Also learned they weren't sharp tailed grouse but spruce. Hadn't seen them last year and knew for certain the others were ruffed grouse. Ha now I know.
