Gunsmithing legal stuff

I'm wondering if I could do rust blueing as a side job,but I heard from many people that you now need licensing to do gunsmithing(confirmed it's true) but would the act of bluing the steel parts(doing no work to the guns mech itself just redoing the finish(I like redoing stocks to) but would that req. licensing as a gunsmith. Thanks in advance for all your help

The act of bluing or refinishing stocks (only) to require a smith license seems a little extreme to me, but not surprising.....
others more knowledgeable will chime in shortly, I'm sure.

As long as you are not handling the action {deemed a firearm since it has a serial #}. The balance of parts are not a firearm in itself.
Guess customers can bring in the parts but not the action.

I asked the FO in BC some years ago and was told that you require a gunsmithing license to do any work on a firearm for money. That translates as I understand it to mean that if you charge for your work you need a license but if you are working on your own guns or help a friend for free, you do not need a license. I believe that you also require a business license for your area in addition to the gunsmithing license.

A difference between restricted and non-restricted guns is the biggest issue even if you're doing it for free.

The answer you are seeking is YES you need to be licenced to do the stuff you describe if you are doing it for money AND if you plan to do it with restricted and or prohib receivers. Refinishing "Parts" and stocks , (not including receivers of restricted and prohib) require no such licence.
In short you can do all the free work you want as long it's on parts, accessories , stocks and non restricted whole firearms. This is my understanding
Edit to add: you can do all the free work you want on a friend's restricted or prohib... ONLY IF you are present doing the free work in a place that firearm is permitted to be. Like at yer buddy's residence for example.

Yes it would as you would still be in possession of firearms not your own as a business.
This is not really that hard to obtain, at least here anyway.
What I would look into though is whether there are any municipal restrictions on the blueing activity in so far as haz mat or ecological concerns.
There used to be several places here that did various types of blueing, but the city passed a law on disposal of wastes that made it nearly impossible to comply with to do with the disposal of waste water and chemicals so about the only operations that do blueing in southern Alberta are outside the of Calgary city limits.
Something I would look into before getting to deep an investment into the enterprise.
