Hog Saddle anyone?

So if your using the Manfortto ball head do you have the option of using the "quick" detach or screwing it into the ball head?

Been running with the PIG saddle for about a year now. If you adhere to the fundamentals you can become very effective with it. My shooting partner and I have used it in several matches and were making quality hits out to 800 yards standing.

Well I finally got around to mounting the saddle on the tripod etc.
First impressions, Awesome maching and finish!!! I was a machinist in a previous life and the quality is "top shelf"

Mounted it on the Manfrotto, and just did some quick tests with different rifles.
Very impressed, simple but very useful, it makes positioning the rifle very easy and extremely stable. 10 out of 10.

Now I just need to get some range time.

So where does one get one of these hog saddles?

I've been meaning to get a tripod for hunting (too much brush in the cuts around here) but just haven't gotten around to it. The Manfrottos that everyone is mentioning, are these the "compact action" line of tripods?

hogsaddle.com

they also make a cheaper version called the big saddle that may be an option for some.

They are nice, I have made some nice hits with mine. Adding sling tension to the front really locks it in solid when shooting. 055xprob with 054 magnesium ball head.

Interesting.

Any issues with the rubber causing marks etc on the side of the stock under recoil?

I'm assuming that half the point of these is that they are threaded for your standard camera tripod thread?

He uses a "recoil" absorbing material, which is non marking. It can attach via the Manfrotto plate or a threaded hole, very flexible.

300$! Wow that's more than what I thought it would cost.

That's for the HOG model, which is what I have. Once you get your hands on it though, you realize that the maching & fit & finish is "top shelf" it's light weight and really works with the Manfrotto tripod.

No issue at all with marking, it won't move as long as its cranked in there properly. The hog has large and small threaded mounting. The larger size will mount directly onto the tripod so it can be used without a ball head but then you have no pan/tilt.

Mind if I ask what you guys are all using for a tripod with these setups and what the max weight capacity of it is? I just started doing some more research on getting a little bit better of a tripod and was curious if any of you guys have exceeded or if it's even crossed your minds when putting these setups together.

I'm using the Manfrotto carbon fiber model with the "ball head" not cheap, but I'm a "buy once, cry once" kinda guy. As far as weight goes, all my rifles are under 15lbs, and the tripod is G2G.

Full disclosure they are not my pics but from hogsaddles.com

And I agree, I just want to show an option for people not wanting to spend $300 on a clamp lol

Shawn

Ya roger that, based on the HOG, if I didn't want to invest the coin, the PIG is G2G IMO. Cheers

The website isn't the clearest in the "item description tab". Am I right in thinking that the PIG doesn't clamp?

The PIG is the same as the HOG just a slightly different design and he made some machining/fabrication efficiencies, to cut the cost. Either one is G2G, and both operate and clamp the same.

The hog looks amazing - sort of just stumbled across it recently. I think I will be buying shortly. That and a manfrotto tripod and probably the 054 head.

edit: ordered the hog saddle, Manfrotto 055 and a 054 mag ball.
