1 in 7 twist + 55g = misery?

Just ordered my first black rifle, waiting on IRG to ship it, it comes with a 1 in 7 twist 14.5" barrel. Everything I read says the tighter the twist, the happier it will be with heavier bullets. I get that.

Just how miserable am I going to be with 55g rounds? Most all of the cheap ammo I can find (and can afford to shoot - that's one of the reasons for moving to .223) is 55g as far as I can find. Barnaul does a 62g but that's it. Obviously shooting the cheapest ammo I can find I'm not expecting match winning accuracy, just a relative comparison.

So, how much of a difference does it make for you guys who have shot a few weights through your 1 in 7 rifles?

TIA

pretty happy at 50 yards, you could be pretty miserable at 100 and 200 yards, your mileage may vary depending on your barrel, each one is pretty much different, you'll have to try a bunch of ammo with different grains and velocity to find your sweet spot.

1:7 works just fine with 55 grain FMJ in my experience. If you are getting poor accuracy with this type of ammo out of a 1:7 barrel, it is an ammo quality problem, not a rifling twist problem.

Yeah, I'm already looking forward to trying a bunch of different ammo to see which has the sweet spot.

I pretty much shoot at 100 and 200m. Shooting at 50m doesn't seem worth it. Coming to this from shooting cheap ammo out of cheap guns I`m not expecting MOA performance.

I guess it can be down to me to show which works best from MY gun.

Within the terms of what we are talking about, you can't "over-stabilize" a bullet. Very light bullets may come apart in very fast twist barrels (I wouldn't use a 36 gr in a 1/7 twist), but normal sized bullets will be fine in 1/7.

Sort of -- nothing really to do with weight - but the very thin jackets the lighter "varmint" bullets almost always use.

55gr no issues in a 1:7 - to around 400m wear the wind will start to push it over hell's half acre.

I've fired 1000s of 55 grain through my 16 inch and 10.5 inch ARs. Never had a problem with them. As stated, 1/7 can't overstabilize 55gr, but 1/9 is not fast enough for 77gr.

That said, my 1/7 LOVE 62 gr.. Have fun!!.

No issues with 55gr AE black box out of my DD 1:7 16.5". I can routinely smack manhole covers and 12-18" gongs at 500 yds.

The issue, i think, is as Kevin mentioned - with light skinned varmint bullets and fast twists combined with high velocities.

My KAC SR15 Mod 2 have a 1 in 7 ROT and while the 55 gr shot ok, the big difference with the rifle came with Barnaul 62 gr and expect my X 855 62 gr to be even better.... JP.
