I just picked up a bulk box of winchester universal 2 3/4 #4 12 guage. Is this a decent choice for rabbit. Shooting out of my mossberg 500?

I always hunted them whatever i had on hand. Anything from 7 1/2 to 4, and the rabbits didn't seem to be able to tell the difference.

With a tight choke you can get some long range use out of these #4s. I have a really old box of Canucks in this size lying around. For a change I tried these in my 12 gauge Turkeyslayer shotgun last spring.

Easily plopped a bunny at 58 long paces. It was as if someone turned off his light switch and no excessive destruction either. Just a very uniform pattern and several evenly spaced hits.

I love number 5s for bunnys seems to be the best of both worlds .I runn hounds and the bunnys are running most times .number 5s have enough shot to carry thru the brush Dutch

heavy for cotton tail and snow shoes but about right for jack rabbits

Number 5 is only right for white tail jack rabbits if you standing on their backs when you pull the trigger.

BB is considerably better. And one could easily make a good argument here for smaller buckshot for this large hare species IMO.

I base this upon 11 years of hunting various varmints in Southern Saskatchewan.

Always used 7 1/2s backed up by a #4 duck hand load just in case. 870 12 gauge modified choke. Put lots of bunnies in the pot and we kicked up a grouse the #7 1/2s worked for it as well.

It's okay but I generally go with a high brass #6 load, a good charge to give the pellets more snap at longer range, and the #6 gives you lots of pellets! For rabbits I prefer a modified choke, though I've used a full choke before when all I was getting was long shots.

I hunted rabbits for years with a cut-off 12 guage with cylinder bore.

I found 7 1/2 is fine for maybe up to 20 yards. #5 field load would get me 25+ yards, and a #5 heavy duck load 30+ yards.

I carried some of each when out, and just popped in what was needed based on whatever bunny I was shooting at.

Sometimes you could almost walk right up to them before they got skittish, others would take off at a run at 40+ yards. I guess some were hunted before....
