Well folks finally got into the .17cal game so I got a nice little Nef Sportster in .17hmr. Just got it today and couldn't wait to take it out. This gun and caliber really surprised me. Once I got used to the trigger and such it will consistently group 1/2 inch at 100 yards, with both Winchester and Hornady 17 grain poly-tip ammo I couldn't believe the accuracy for poor visabilty due to low light at dusk. I will post target pic's shortly.

Congrats! It is a cracker little round... Generally it doesn't get a lot of respect- either it is too expensive (.22lr is better) or it is too wimpy (.223 is better), but whatever. Its always a good day when I take mine out. It must have been a calm evening as wind at 100 yards will open those groups up, but that's what makes it fun!

I'll try to have them up today, I'll use my wifes Iphone as I hate cell phones and sold mine. As far as wind, it was pretty good out but was very overcast and 7pm, 20g Xtp ammo didn't shoot too well as the grouping opened up a bit, i have that group on the same target as well.

I have both a Ruger and a Savage 17HMR and both shoot 1/2 to 3/4" groups at 100 yards with 17 grain, and the groups open up to 2 to 3 inches with the 20 grain.

my savage 17 really prefers 20gr, and I stick with cci game points...although I didn't try cci 17gr when I first got the gun either, just got 2 packs to try out soon ths week

i tried fed and win ammo when I first got it, 1" was the best I could do and often worse

here's the gun in a boyd's stock with some DIP stuff...if i had to guess probably 1100-1300 rounds through it since I got it, one of my favourite guns right now...it groups great 50-100 but after that opens up in the wind

50 yard competition with the gf

100 yd group

and 300 yd pot shots trying to learn the wind

Nice gun!! and nice grouping, I have to say that this little caliber really surprised me and i'm using a $150 rifle, I can see me getting another rifle in this caliber, prob a Savage, but right now i'm happy with my little single shot.

200 yards. CZ 455 Lux /w Yodave Trigger. Redfield Revenge 3-9x40. Rifle was bagged on a bench. Hornady 17.5gr. I was satisfied with the result, given the breeze that was blowing through the valley that day. I was aiming for the 9 on the target as I thought the rifle was shooting a bit left at 100 yards, turns out must have just been me.

I'm going to go out again this weekend and stretch it out past 100 and see what happens, nice group for 200 yards! Just hoping it will have the power to drop a fox at 100, here on P.e.i were limited to rimfire only on fox but can use centerfire on coyotes, and I don't like the idea of wounding animals with a .22 at longer ranges.

Love 17 hmr all but taken over for grouse eradication lol

^^^^ This, just came back from up north with mine, I just could not use the 10/22 even once, the .17 is just a laser!!!! (Federal V max, CCI V max, or TNT) First time I ever saw a grouse flying dead, just banging into the trees while most of its head was missing.

Very nice shooting. Where did you buy the Nef ?

Got it on here on Cgn, very good quality for a cheap gun. everything fits nice and tight, and I really like the bull barrel. There's another one on here for a good price the very same as the one I bought on here.

I don't think you'll have a problem there, there's lots of vids of brit's shooting fox with 17hmr. Guys around here drop coyote's with 17hmr's all the time. They go down right away if you hit them in the brain hole at 100 yards, and not much farther for a vitals hit. It's a small round, but all it's energy get's dumped into the target on impact.

Well today is the long range test day today, i'll be using a 10" by 10" steel ringer plate. I'm gonna try to video tape it for proof of the hits. My question is how far out should I attempt??? My Marlin .22 semi can ring it consistently out to 220 yards, so im thinking 300+. Just looking for ideas where it will be more challenging. Good day for this as its sunny and fairly low wind, (10-25kms).

Here's what my Marlin xt17 vsl shot this morning at 100yds. I guess it likes the fed v shock. Kinda sucks because they're the more expensive ones but that's the way she goes.

I had a pair of NEF HMR's... they were both crazy accurate... and then I went through a number of Savage, Ruger, CZ and Cooper HMR's, and now I am completely out of the hummer game... They just don't make sense for me... loading for .22 KH and .223 means I can duplicate the performance at pretty much the same price... for small game I switched to HM2 rifles... they are just as accurate to 100 yards and do less damage to the game... HM2 is the perfect squirrel cartridge IMO, and at half the price of hummer ammo... my new HM2's are rebarrelled Ruger 77/22's, with VQ muzzle-weighted 16" barrels... when I just gotta crank off a bazillion rounds, I can use 25 round mags in them too.
