The 222 Rem for moose?

The 17 Remington for moose?

There is a guy up here who killed an 82" bull moose with 13 shots using a 17 Remington. He thinks the bullets failed. :HR:

Wondering what your experiences have been with the 17 Rem on moose?

I knew a guy who would shoot moose with a .410 using slugs. Little single shot.

Pfft! I wish I had his kind of cash to throw around! I'll stick with my trusty old Crossman .177 air rifle. Some say it's a little light on power, but the freezer full of Cape Buffalo don't lie.

if you mean: would it work if you had to make it work and had no option?

1) I think with a twist of 1/12 and a stout 60gr bullet it would make a very fine "deer in the apple orchard" round. With the standard 1/14 twist I am pretty certain a person who was desperate could manage the same thing with some 50gr loads. Its not like .22mag (or even .22lr) havent worked under those conditions.
2) Moose - same as above but within 50 yards; I'd think you would want a very fast follow up shot or two not only available but delivered.
3) Bear - black, small - yes as well - like 2) above

if you mean: should you use it if you have an option? no.

Hate to say this but the Inuit in both eastern and western arctic used 222 on everything from polar bears to narwhale, seals, caribou.
Now with the all the surplus 5.56 available guess what the most popular cartridge up north.
I say this from the experience of living in the high arctic for 10+ years.
If it didn't go down with the first magazine keep on loading!!

yes!

As a kid we had a old bear rug ... it wasnt huge but the teeth were fearsome to a small child. It was the victim of a 12g shotgun - one shot

Funny you type this.
Was talking to a buddy of mine and he says this works with a slug barrel good for 50 yards.
Not sure if it's a splendid eye deer or not?
 
I cannot relate any experience with either the 222 or the 17 Rem. on Moose, but a long deceased friend worked as a cook in a mining camp many decades ago and his moose rifle was an 1892 Winchester 25-20.
He kept the camp supplied with moose meat and venison with the little rifle and never had a problem dropping them.... his secret was to wait for a very close shot and that's all it took.
He was not a man to exaggerate and I learned a lot about that little rifle which I still have and use.... but not for Moose.
