Looking for a old/used truck to take into the deep bush up north by a cottage. Going on some rough trails, following old logging routes and hydro access roads.

I was consider an old GMC/Chevy truck, Toyota SR-5/Forerunner or Gen 1 Ford Bronco.

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions?
 
I'm partial to the Toyota: little smaller, lighter and able to squeeze in tighter trails. As said - parts can be pricey. Some have been beaten up pretty bad and some have been babied. Avoid the 3.0L V6 as it had head gasket issues. Any 4cyl is pretty tough. Make sure the A/C works ... its not a luxury anymore in the summer!

Edit to add -- never owned a GM truck so really cant comment. My experiences with Ford have been less than stellar (which pushed me to Toyota!!) although not owned a recent f150 which are pretty well regarded
 
Out of your choices I'd pick the yota, less weight to start with easier to get unstuck and cheaper on fuel... Unless your hauling a quad and then your going to get bored on the hiway really quick.


Some good mud terrain tires and a winch will take any vehicle just about anywhere you don't want to go ;)
 
Toyota... You can't go wrong with a Hilux (or Tacoma in NA terms) or a Land Cruiser. Small wheelbase is a big plus.

Be warned, some older 4 cyl Toyotas have timing chain issues.

Most say parts are expensive... But in the longrun you will have to replace less of them.

Wow, a lot of Toyota fans here. I'm concerned about the availability and cost of parts. There is a reasonably priced and never-ending supply of parts for GM. I suppose the same goes for Ford - except for Gen 1 Bronco. My friend had one a long time ago and I liked it. But I'm still a big fan of GM and like the Toyota. Anyone have any other brand to suggest?
 
Its not a truck but its hard to go wrong with a Jeep to get you out into the bush to go shooting, parts EVERYWHERE, affordable and easy to turn around on single lane logging trails.

Toyota 4banger for best gas mileage tho that aspect cannot be beat.

My "bush toy" and daily driver if I'm not on my KLR650, hasn't ever dicked me around but its crap on gas out of the box but the power to climb hills and trails I gladly put up with it.

95 cherokee, 6.5" lift, 31" All Terrains. Only got about $1200 total into it, got it for a hell of a deal.

There's a reason they are now the #1 manufacturer in the world.... very good vehicles... even years ago... a friend of mine had a Land Cruiser , man did he abuse that thing and it kept on going and going

10MPG, turning radius measured in yards, not feet, 8000lb curb weight, EGR issues, TCM issues, DPF issues...I had my hand on that particular stove. Limped mine almost 200km and traded it in this spring. Barely 160K on the clock. Never again.

The absolute best, cannot be beat off road trucks are the Land Rover Defenders and Toyota Land Cruisers. Small, light, capable and nimble. The places you can take one of these things, unmodified, is mind-boggling. Once you've seen what they can do the allure of rig-pig-cadillacs wears off pretty quickly.
