Just happened to have some 357 snap caps on my desk and dropped one in to
my Python target 38 to see how far it would settle in to the cylinder. It fully
chambered. This is a 38 target model. Wondering if anyone out there has one and if you
can also chamber 357's. This gun has not been altered to my knowledge.

Did you try a live round? Probably your snap cap is a bit too short or serves as a 38/357.
OK

I didn't realize that the Python came in .38 only. Colt used to make a Diamdondback which was chambered for .38 Special only. Are you sure your Python is supposed to be .38 only? What does the barrel stamp say?

Yup its a Python target model. Stamped "Python Target 38 special ctg" on the barrel. These are very scarce guns
as there were only 3,489 made . Were not so popular back in the day but are rarely seen today. I'm sure the snake guys
on the forum are familiar with them. There's info on the web. Anyway I only shoot 38's and don't have a box of 357's around
but my snaps are 357 specific. Could be wrong but I believe they are dimensionally identical to a live cartridge.
Maybe someone out there has one of these Pythons and can see if they can chamber a 357.

Epps was selling one a week ago or so. If that is the one you got, good snag.

That's very interesting I will check mine out as well.

I have a Python Target 38 Special and have never tried to put a 357 Magnum in it. My understanding they were made in 38 Special so there would be no bullet jump that a 38 Special would have in a 357 Magnum chamber. This would increase accuracy and produce little recoil, and trust me with an eight inch barrel they are like shooting a 22LR with 2.7 grains of Bullseye with 148 grain lead HBWC. They are made with the same steel and could withstand the 357 Magnum pressure. But why would you bump up the pressure if the firearm was made for accuracy with the shorter bullet.

Wasn't planning on shooting 357. Just thought that the target chamber would only allow for 38's.

A lot of variables here. Some 38 loads can be very close to the col of some 357 loads. It wasn't designed specifically for it, so I wouldn't fire 357's in it (and considering what Pythons are going for in particular). The only way to know is to try it with dummy rounds you make up yourself with the various bullet weights and see what happens. - dan
