Please recommend a rifle

Hi, I am new to hunting.

Could you please recommend me a rifle and calibre for moose and white tailed deer hunting?

Something resalable. I don't think I will be shooting beyond 300 yards. I am ready to spend $1000 for rifle only.

Any advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the M70 in 308 would be a fine choice. Lots of other choices as well, so pick something that YOU like. Tikka, Ruger, Browning, Savage, Remington... they all make decent rifles in your price range, but sometimes you need to watch which model you choose. 308, 30-06, 270, the list could go on forever. Take a look at some other rifles and see if anything else tickles your fancy, and if not, go with your M70 in 308.
 
I think the model 70 is a classic. The one drawback to the gun that I see is that it does not have a detachable mag, personally I like to use a detachable mag, especially with all the loading and unloading that you will invariably end up doing during hunting season. One mag in the gun, one mag in the pocket and no loose cartridges that dump onto the ground and jingle in your pocket! Anyway that is my opinion...

In rifles these days it is harder to find a bad one than a good one. I am also assuming that you are looking at bolt actions since you mention the M70.

Look at Tikka, Savage, Weatherby Vanguard/howa, Frick look at them all and find out what feels best to you.

As far as resale, you loose a bit when you buy a new gun, a used gun does not usually depreciate as much.

Calibers: .308 would be good for your first rifle, Magnums kick hard and can make any new shooter flinch.
 
For that kinda money you can get a nice Wby Vangard in a nice wood stock and still be ahead of the game.
Of course the cation and fitment of the stock must be comfortable to hold and shoulder.
So, when all the recommendations come together find them and try them out (except for firing that is) and see what works best for you.

Buy a used .308 in any quality rifle. Since you mentioned re-sale, a used rifle will allow you to recover most or all of what you spend.

Don't cheap on optics and don't plan on selling them with your rifle.
 
I am a big rugger fan and thy are putting out some amazing deer rifles in the last few years .hard to beat a good little bolt action in anything from 243 up to 300 win mag .I have been looking for one in 260 for my next deer rifle Dutch

Buy that.
 
The Featherweight is a nice rifle, and comes in at under your price limit. There is an eye-popping 30-06 with grade 2 wood up-grade sitting at North-Pro that someone should snap up, and its still in your price range.

The new production Winchester M70s are in a different league than the decades of so so rifles they cranked out.
 
I'd be looking at something I could use year around. A 270 or 260 or even 6.5x55 all meet the regs in Ontario and could be used year around from coyotes to ground hogs in the right areas of course. That way you get lots of practice under hunting conditions and become very familiar with the gun. Otherwise you're confined to a range or a few weeks of the hunting season. Your buck, but think before you buy
 
Shoulder a few different makes at your local gun shop. See what you feel most comfortable with. Most well know brands have a good product these days. That said I feel in love with the Browning XBolt when I took ahold of one and bought one a short time later
