Hey yall, I have around a $1000 budget to buy a rifle and mount a scope. What rifle would you buy and what scope would you mount on it? I will be using the rifle primarily for hunting deer, and elk. I live in BC. Just looking to see what you more experienced hunters would recommend thanks!

Look for an older rem 700 in 30-06.... preferably a mountain rifle version.... get a vortex diamondback to top it...

If you want newer, get a ruger m77 mark II and up your scope budget....

Good luck. A thousand dollars doesn't buy much these days. Look for a used tika. Hopefully, you'll have enough to buy a used optic.

There is a pile of high quality used Husqvarna 1600 series in .30-06 on the TEC Tradeex website for under 500 dollars. Top it with a Leupold VX2 3-9x40 and you're set for life.

at what ranges do you want to be able to make an ethical kill of an elk? is weight a concern? is recoil a concern?

For a $1000 you are pressing your luck for anything more than the cheapest out there available if you look at new stuff, The quality stuff used sytill commands a high price as well. My suggestion would be to save up till closer to next years season and buy/cry once.

hes looking for a hunting gun, npt a 600-1000 yard benchrest rifle. Honestly, as much hate as they get a remington 770 in whatever caliber you want from 223 up through 300WSM will cost 400 after taxes right now, and a nikon prostaff 5 for another 400 after taxes. I have this exact combo at home specifically for hunting/no worries about dinging it up. With remington corelokt 150 gr in 7mm remington magnum I sighted in at 30 yards and rang the 6" gong at my range at 200 yds all day long. Accurate and repeatable, my POI changes roughly 4 inches from 30 yards out the 350 yards, perfect for hunting.

Build one with scope for $1000? You need more cash.
If you mean buy one for $1000 with scope, there are options, though you're limited to used or one of the entry level Ruger American or Savage.

Wow, I had no idea $1000 would not get me much. I am interested in the Ruger Americans. I have read some reviews and it seems like you get a lot of gun for the price. I could pair the Ruger American with a good scope and easily be under $1000. What you guys think?

Id say that is a great starter gun, or gun that needs no babying. In your price range to start hunting, then you can hunt for years with it while you save for a really decent, lifetime lasting rifle

Rule of thumb is your scope should never cost less than the rifle it sits on. You can never buy to good of scope, and a great scope on a mediocre rifle far surpasses a mediocre scope on a great rifle

For just shy of 800.00, i mounted a rifle for my grandauther, everthing is brand new and the rifle is quite accurate, keeping in mind it is a hunting rifle, this will last and render great service... JP.

Used Tikka T3, i often see them at very resonable price on the EE and other online selling sites, plus there is many caliber choice.

For the optic, new or used Redfield or Leupold VX2.

I hear this scope sentiment regurgitated all the time and personally feel that it is a load of bunk... IMO, you never have to spend more than a Leupold VX2 (Vari-X2 or VX-II) unless you really just gotta have the best... I have been using this series of scope for more than 25 years... it is rugged, bright and I have never had one lose POI or malfunction... total cost = $450ish... $300ish on the used market. I have them on rifles costing $1000-$2000, and I am not embarrassed to say so... Now having said this... I do have a couple Zeiss and Swarovski scopes and the quality is apparent, but to my mind, it is certainly not necessary.

Great advice thank you!

I disagree... and i have some nice glass in the safe.... you dont need a 1000 dollar scope to be accurate.... but you dont want a package bushnell either.... get a vortex diamondback a redfield revolution or a lower end leupold and dont look back....they are all great hunting rigs....

I cant say enough good things about the Nikon scope I purchased recently. MSRP was 369.99 + taxes, on sale at cabellas for 299. I went in looking for a 400 dollar scope, looked at a bushenll elite 3200 on sale, redfield, and vortex and in that price range I got the best sight picture and clarity from the Nikon, 4-12x40mm Prostaff 5
