Anyone know where to get S&W Colt Python-clone grips?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to get into the bigger revolver market, and I would buy a Colt Python/Anaconda in a heartbeat if they still made them, not just for the build quality but because I really like the looks/aesthetics/proportions of them.

I find there is nothing out now that has the same basic good looks of the Python, and that's what I'd like to ask: Does anyone know where to get S&W revolver grips that are clones of the Colt Python style?

As much as I'd prefer a Python/Anaconda, I would be very happy if I could get a 5" S&W 629 in 44mag with grips like this pic I found in Google:

It has everything, the walnut colour, the shape, and even the gold logo inset. Anyone know where I can find them?
 
I find the S&W "Deluxe" (Talo Edition) model's grip way more beautiful, my personal choice, with the nice ingraving in the wood.

Those aren't Python-clone grips, they're target grips. I have been looking for a set for my 586 for a while. My local gun store told me that they used to throw them out since everyone wanted rubber grips. They are scarce so if you find a set in good shape, buy them.

BTW, why would you get a .44 if you wanted a Python? Wouldn't a 686/586 be closer as it is a .357? People used to call them the poor man's Python.

I don't mean literally a clone, so much as just generally looking the same. They're wood with that shape, and have the little gold inset.

That's all I meant, not so much that it has to be 357 and the checkering/texture has to be exactly the same.

It's the aesthetics and general look of the Python I'm looking to "clone", more so than having something that shares all the exact specs.

The S&W grips are called Goncalo Alves target grips. On numerous models back in the day but a lot of folks found the checkering to be too aggressive and went with
Pachmayr or equivilent rubber at the time. They are out there but u have to look. Try posting a WTB ad in the EE.

I would still suggest the 586/686 for three reasons. One is if you plan to actually shoot it. The .357 mag ammo cost is half of the .44 mag. It's generally $25-35 for 50 rounds of .357. You pretty much have to be into reloading if you shoot .44.

The second reason is frame size. The 586 shares a similar size frame with the Python where the 629 is larger.

The third is cost. The 586/686's are a bit cheaper to purchase and are more available.
 
I completely get all of the pros/cons of 357/44mag.

I do the vast majority of my range shooting with a semi-auto, and I'm just in the process of scaling back from a 10mm to a 9mm, so I fully get the ammo argument.

However, now that I'm going to 9mm for my primary gun, the reason I want to go up to 44mag is because this will just be a "sometimes gun". When I go to the range I'll likely keep putting 100+ semi-auto rounds through the target, but then just pull out the revolver and empty one drum into it.

Therefore the cost difference is negligible in my big picture, and not worth more than the undeniable machismo aspect of just owning a 44mag to shoot sometimes. I'm not full-throttle crazy, though, I briefly thought about a 500S&W before realizing that was perhaps a bit too over the top and a 44mag would suit my needs.
