One rifle, one calibre, one cartride.

I have used my Remmy 700 LSS in .338 RUM on everything from whitetails and mules up to moose and elk. 250 grain tsx's are the current fodder and seem to do just fine.

The practical side of me says any CRF bolt action rifle with irons chambered in 30-06.

The guy in me says any CRF bolt action rifle with irons chambered in .375 H&H. ;)

What no SKS crowd in all the seven pages, and I thought the SKS was the be all and end all, all joking a side the Remington 700 in 308 in my opinion one of the best all purpose calibers out there.

I currently do all of my big game hunting with a custom rifle chambered in 7mmstw. The rifle is built on a Stiller Predator action, match grade #5 fluted barrel, Timney trigger, PTG bottom metal, bedded into a McMillan BDL pattern stock with molded in black/tan/olive colors. I shoot a 150gr TTSX at 3400fps.

And a cherry on top...

This one's easy. For North American game, the 7 x 57. Load it with 140 grain TSXs or another quality bonded or partition bullet and it will take everything this continent has to offer, without undue recoil. Easy to shoot (accurately), and deadly on all manner of game.

7 x 57

An appropriate minimum for the do it all, legal everywhere, on everything, North American big game rifle, is the .30/06. An intelligent step up from the .30/06 brings us to the 9.3X62 and the big case .375s, which include the H&H, the Ruger, the Styer, the Dakota, the Ultra, both Weatherbys, and a bunch of wildcats and propriety cartridges. An argument could be made for the .416s, which also boast a flat trajectory. A big case .458 is more of a niche cartridge, and although flat shooting, few are willing to shoot them from supported field positions, thus limiting their versatility. If you feel slighted because I ignored your favorite .338 or .35, sorry.
