Can't find the lands

Hey folks bought a rebarrelled VZ24 in 30-06, shot the gun with some standard reloads and some factory rounds, no signs of pressure with either and both shot extremely accurately. I now want to work a load up for the rifle and went to check the lands by jamming the bullet in like I normally do. My issue is the action fully and easily closes on everything and doesn't push the bullet into the case at all even when I have it seated out as far as possible. Is there something I'm missing? Is it a bad rebarrel? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Is it possible that the bullet is getting grabbed by the lands and pulled out when you extract the test round?
Have you tried with a couple of different bullet makes / versions?

I have tried the only two bullets I have on hand 165gr core lokts and 180gr core lokts I took a sharpie to the whole bullet and there were no marks on it at all. Can't get pictures right now but basically picture a round with bullet seated as far out as possible.

I have no idea what you call "extremely accurate."

Your definition and mine may be completely different.

One of the most accurate rifles I own has a very long throat. I is of 6.5 caliber and even the long 160 grain bullets I have in both VLD and round nose will not seat on or close to the lands. In fact, this rifle shoots all bullet weights into sub .5 moa groups of 10 with boring consistencey as long as I do my part. I load the bullets as long as the mag will allow for free movement and loading into the chamber.

Several milsurps, including 30-06/7.62 Nato/7x57/8x57/6.5x55/6.5x51-53R.7.62x54R/303 Brit and others have very deep throats as well. The thing is, as long as the rest of the chamber dimensions aren't overly generous as well and if the base of the bullet still has some contact with the neck of the case as it enters the leade all should be well. It's only when the chambers are almost extremely generous that accuracy issues occur and you need to be close to the leade/lands.

It sounds like your chamber is on the minimum side. Lucky you. I have seen such rifles actually shoot worse when the bullets are to close to the lands.

If you are happy with what you call extremely good accuracy with factory ammo, you may want to full length resize or partially resize the body on your cases when reloading. For some rifles, this seems to be a necessary step. You seem to have one such rifle. They react completely differently to accuracy enhancing than normal rifles.

If that were my rifle, I would try partially resizing the case and neck and load my bullets out as far as they will perform properly in the mag. No sense fixing something that already works really well.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea, any idea where to buy casting alloy in Canada? Ottawa area preferably, thanks[/QUOTE

You could try the Stittsville Shooting Range - they seem to have something of everything. Or, at least, could point you in the right direction.

You could also try Jason Spencer's gunsmith shop at 190 Colonnade Road in Ottawa.
