Worth it to buy a buttstock monopod?

The problem with monopods is that they are only good from a solid surface. Any grass or gravel and they become useless because recoil disturbs every shot. I made a bag out of the plastic pellets that is used in molding plastic. They are a mix of flat and oval plastic pellets. Make the sock firm...but not too much. Do it enough times and you'll find the perfect setup for yourself

I tried a good quality monopod on my rifle. I played around with it for a season and ended up back with my little bean bag or a nice leather bunny ear bag. I found there was too much fiddling around and it really slowed down requisition after recoil.

As an added bonus it would be pretty hard to break a bean bag!

As with most hear, I prefer a bag...not the bunny ear type but home made bag I made out of a green army sock and poly beads used in stuffed toys. I got them at a craft store and prefer them to rice, split peas etc as they don't absorb moisture, are light and doesn't matter if they get wet. I had a monopod and also an AI rifle with a butt spike and found the bag I made more versatile than anything else, especially in a field setting on rough and uneven terrain.

They have their place, and work well when needed if you find a sturdy one. Shooting off a bench using a rear bag is typically better for reasons all ready mentioned.

The other thing is not all monopods are created equal. The most sturdy I have found is an integral part of the sako TRG folding stock. Incidentally its the only one I would use over a bag.

When you don't have a bag, and really need to stabilize the rear stock, a mono pod comes in handy, very handy and will most likely help improve your accuracy.

Had two different BT monopods, one on a remington 700, the other on my semi auto .50BMG serbu.

Both rifles suffered an immediate and noticable decrease in accuracy when using the monopod over a rear bag, mainly in windage, elevation remained similar.

I tried tons of ways to try and make them work, but they are a pain to use accurately, and you have to fiddle with them every shot. Not a fan of them, stick to the polymer ball filled bagsfor most of your precision applications, you will have faster follow up shots and shoot more accurately.

The only monopod I have ever used and liked is the one built into the desert tactical arms SRS rifle, solid and well built, and still shoots sub MOA with ease.

Never did like the mono pod nor get used to it.

For me a regular length men's sock in natural toejam camo and precisely stuffed to perfection with orville redenbacher, un popped of course.

Stick a baseball bat up your ass, sit and balance yourself on it.........or grab a bean bag chair......tell me what's more stable and comfortable. Buy a rear bag and learn how to use it. You'll be light years ahead.

Hopefully Caramel tries the baseball bat so we don't have to listen to all his bull####!

Wtf is that video supposed to prove?? All it does is reinforce my belief that the groups you claim to shoot with that setup are BS.
I've never seen so much fiddle f$cking around between shots. Your follow through after the shot sucks also.

Exactly I've never seen so much loading and unloading of a bipod in a string ever... Not to mention a jerky trigger finger. World record 300 yard group right there!

Ok... so caramel has weighed in....not sure what effect it has had on me though...

Is he even using a monopod? Seems like it, but you don't show it in the video, nor does you mention the brand...

Less than ideal bipod loading and trigger control, but I have seen good groups like that, perhaps not all the time, but they do occur, so no complaints here on that...

Why don't you ever run a setup showing the target hits as you do them, or have another CGN member that has offered to shoot with you verify the results? Lots of big talk with nothing other than a poorly videoed closeup on your gun... without even offering anything to the thread you are posting in about what the heck you are doing...

No offense buddy, but you dig your own grave on this site.

I'll weigh in on this. I have an AIAW with ground spike. I used to use it and it did work ok due to its fine adjustment capability. However, it moved after every shot and you had to fine adjust it to get the crosshairs back on target every time (takes alot of dialing and messing about) and this led to inconsistent shooting.

I now use a TAB rear bag and it is much more stable and consistent and I shoot better with it. A good rear bag is definitely better than any monopod.

What exactly is this showing us?

For the sake of the tread, in this video, i am shooting of the bipod and monopod, tru we dont see it, but it's there stuck under my harm, in between shots wiggle is unimportant, when you deliver the shot is the only time you need total immobility ... Anyway here is the picture of the set up, so you can see the monopod ( bought from Wolverines, make is Accu-Shot 3.4 /4.5 inch )... JP.

Swissin's rear bag is perfect best I have used I would listen up and give it a try. I have used allot of different bags with different fills his is right on with the mix of flat and oval pellets. His was not even meant for my rifle and it still worked better then anything I have tried.

Caramel all I can say is LMAO!! You always provide me with endless entertainment!

Caramel it looks like you were using a rear bag under the monopod...from the way you were slamming the butt up and down. Like i said, monopods can work off of a bench or a very flat hard surface, but on dirt mounds and in real world situations they are complete schit. No sniper on earth uses them and personally i think they are a gimmick for stock makers to gouge us just a little bit more!
