gonna be a tough hunt this year

Wolves have no effect whatsoever on deer numbers. Wolves are good for the deer population. Habitat loss and last winter's length and snow depth has a far greater effect.

man-o-man, do you not ever quit? Quit what, you ask? 3 guess's, no, for you, lets make as fair as possible, how about an even dozen! Take all the time you need!

Good to hear so many guys are thinking about passing on deer hunting this year. My neighbour, a metis hunter, told me him and his wife need 8 deer this year.

Huh... My neighbor is a treaty card carrying Cree and he won't touch deer nor will most of his family... He gets his moose and maybe a bear an splits it with some of his relatives... 8 deer? Would be cheaper to buy a cow.

He didn't say he was going to eat them, just that he "needed" 8. Illegal sales of wild meat are more common than you'd think.

No kidding. You wouldn't believe how many people want to buy my deer meat off of me. Even if my family didn't consume it all there are certain laws that I wouldn't feel like being punished for.

To their credit the majority of the people don't have a clue that it's illegal for me to sell it.

.....I'd have to charge $25lb to make any money...

LOL that's probably on the low end. I don't even bother adding up the amount of money I put into hunting. It would probably make a drug addiction look cheap.

I am seeing lots of deer where I like to hunt. I have already filled my doe tags and am just waiting for the opportunity to get a nice buck.

NE Sask low on the numbers this year. My hunting quarter usually has about 40 deer in it. I have 8 this year. 3 bucks that need another 2 years and 5 does. What real scary is zero fawns, and lots of wolves on the cams. I've gotten several pics with the whole pack in the picture. A buddy of mine who traps has 56 wolves taken this year. He says he's never seen anything like it. Wolves everywhere.... And they are the primary reason you don't see fawns would be my wager. wolves gotta eat.

The past two seasons during my travels scouting waterfowl I would always see deer, lots of deer and lots of deer sign. This past fall it's as if someone waved a magic wand and made them disappear. I'd be surprised if I counted a dozen all season where before I would count double that in a day. Another indicator is the lack of road kills. I have not seen a road killed deer in months where it was an every week occurrence a year ago where they would cross the hwy at my neighbours.

Not to hijack but curious where you're at exactly? Me and a friend are planning a wolf hunt in January, staying in carrot river at a friend of his place. The Hudson bay co i talked to said we should have some luck.

Well Farley, it ain't necessarily so. While I don't agree with wolf culls, except under exceptional circumstances, clearly the wolf predation impact on deer, moose, and caribou numbers is measurable. If the winter has been hard, and the game weakened through an inability to feed properly, and a late season warm spell combines with those difficult conditions by putting a thick crust on the deep snow, the wolves clearly have the upper hand. IMHO, a wolf is properly treated as a game animal, and should be hunted enthusiastically to keep his numbers in check. Wolves can have a tough life, but they propagate rapidly, and when they succeed its at the detriment of other game.

The problem as of late is that due to low moose populations in many northern parts, wolves have moved into the more southern areas to dine on deer. Now that the deer population is at a very low point, they've started killing quite a bit of livestock which is found in the same areas as deer. Once they figure out how easy of a meal it is, they concentrate solely on beef. Add to that the fact very few are actively trapping due to high fuel prices and low fur prices and the ones left "hunting" are the odd deer hunters and ranchers that shoot one opportunistically, as actually being successful in targeting wolves is a very involved process.
