Hey guys

Im looking for the perfect coyote rifle and am wondering what everyone else is shooting. Currently Im shooting a very accurate Weatherby .243 bolt and Tavor in .223. for dogs. Im thinking of selling the Tavor off and getting a nice bolt gun in a 20-22 cal. Ideally Id like the rifle to have a detach mag, high end composite stock, 20 inch bbl and shoot as good as a Cooper. Rifle needs to be 6 lbs max. I like the Cooper Xcalibur in 220 Swift but would prefer it in a .223 or .204 but they dont make them in those.
I tossed the around the idea of a custom gun by ATRS but at $2000 for just an action...its a bit steep. So anyone have any suggestions? Any good smiths built customs off M700 actions that dont take 2 years to build?

A Cooper in .204 would be my 1st choice. Kimber makes a very accurate .204 with stainless barrel that would also be great for your purpose.

is Cooper making a detachable mag now? For the logest time all their "varmint" style rifle were single shots, kind of defeats the purpose really.
Why get rid of the Tavor? My go to calling rifle is a Swiss Arms only because a couple of the places I call have an almost guaranteed multiple dog arrival and the bolt is too slow in that situation.
 
My predator hunting mentor has the Kimber .204 SS , what a sweet and scary accurate gun.
He is still ribbing me to get a real 'dog rifle" as he puts it LOL I use an LRB M25 with krieger stainless in .308 :D

Don't think so but he said 'ideally' for detachable mag. It's the repeatable accuracy that has me recommending the Cooper and Kimber stainless.

6lbs max? That kind of leaves you looking at a Kimber 84M in .223 doesn't it? Maybe a Model 7 Predator in a Wildcat stock would make the weight too.

I have a CZ 527 American in .204 and its a great gun.

Cooper has had repeaters with detachable mags since 2007. I used a Swiss Arms calling for awhile, but went back to the boltgun.
 
6lb max is fairly limiting I'd say.
I'm building a 6xc right now for a coyote rifle. Should be a dandy cartridge for long range coyotes. Tikka m55 action. Watch the EE for what you want, or something that is a good starting point for a build.

in "varmint" calibers? if they do i apologize, it's been a while since i looked (not 7 years but recently enough) but even their website only list mags down to to .243

And the one I have in .223 is proving itself nicely. I might even go out on the limb and say it has the best trigger of any factory rifle I've ever owned. With 50 gr TNTs over 26 grs of H-335, the holes at 100 are usually all touching, unless the wind gets me. Not bad for a full length stocked rifle that hasn't been bedded. I even got 3 45 gr TSXs to touch, but I had to switch from H-335 to H-4895. H-4895 might well become my go to powder for this rifle, but the experimenting continues.

If I may ask why would a single shot defeat the purpose of being a good varmint rifle? I don't find my #1V Ruger to be a detriment? In fact I feel it makes me a better shooter as I have to pick and choose my shots with a bit more scrutiny and reloading for a quick follow up shot is not much slower than a bolt action if you practice at it and know your rifle. Twice last winter I shot at coyote pairs with being able to reload and shoot before they were out of range of my capability and took 3 of the 4.

Its a great powder in the .204 as well. :D

I keep meeting the same guy at the range with a Cooper .223 A.I. with magazine. That's the 51 and I don't think its been around long. You can get a 54 in 22/250, 22/250 AI and .220 Swift. Its been around since 2009 or so, in which calibers I don't know.

I agree, and if a bolt gun with a fast twist barrel is chosen, and long bullets are seated out to prevent encroaching on the powder space, its handier if you can just drop the round on the follower and close the bolt. If you have an open ammo box beside you, or if you hold a few rounds between the fingers of your support hand, you can keep up a pretty quick rate of fire with that bolt gun.

Im really an accuracy nut...the Tavor is cool but no where near bolt gun accuracy..Plus I heard that its going restricted (all bullpups)in the near future and wont be any good to me. I hope that its just rumor.
