Can I accompany someone while they're hunting?

I have my hunting license, but I'm still debating whether I should get a permit. It's my first time in that area and I would like to see how it is and whether there is potential for harvest.

The question is, my friend will be actively hunting and I will be tagging along, without a rifle on me (will probably be in the truck). Do I need a hunting permit for the season if I'm just accompanying my friend and helping him out with gutting/skinning etc.?

As long as you don't have a rifle you can go for a walk in the bush. Even with your hunting friend. But do NOT help him out with any of his hunting activities... Better yet don't go after all!! It's not worth it. You're taking the chance of a CO misunderstanding the level of your involvement. And you might find it difficult to prove something you didn't do.

i think its pretty safe to acompany your friend. if no armed and not activly hunting you can pack game, help gut whatever.

Don`t go, you are still involved in the "hunt" as a spotter for game. You would need to possess a similar game seal as your friend or at the very least a small game licence. A Conservation Officer may be forgiving if you have a Hunting version Outdoor Card (which is not a hunting permit. It`s just a validation you took the HE course.) BUT it`s not worth up to a $5000 fine and possible jail time. Don`t be cheap and spend the $40/50 and get a game seal, bring a gun and who knows. Right place right time you might end up with a freezer full of meat.
Good luck either way. I leave Sunday for a week of glorious deer hunting.

if you have no rifle there should be no problem

This is asinine to the extreme. No firearm, not hunting, period.

A court would have a hard time convicting an accompanying person who had no firearm in his possession of "hunting".

Just go, enjoy yourself. Don't let the fearmongers influence your decision.

Regards, Dave.

OP if you want the answer just call the MNR Office. It will fall under the title of Party hunting in which anyone involved will need a valid game seal to participate or be a part of the hunt. You will be there you will be a part of the hunt. Now this will all depend on the CO you get stopped by, if you get stopped.

This is a good example of why I say check the regulations in your province and if you aren't sure you understand them clearly, ask an official of the relevant government agency. You are in Quebec and here's someone telling you you can't because Ontario says so. Regulations vary between provinces - e.g. here you can go along, but you must comply with regulation on hi-visibility clothing. Check your province's regulations, ask your province's conservation officers.

so nobody in ontario or quebec can take there kid hunting? what a load of crap. i don't have the skill to take big game barehanded. no rifle not hunting.

I bring a couple non hunters a year out. Non hunters who just want to see what it is all about. A couple chairs in a blind and some effort to have them pursue the sport. There is nothing illegal about it.
They have no active role in the hunt, with the exception of helping carry gear.
Pushing a bush or any other activity that assists the hunt would be illegal.
Last year I had a buddy show up with a case of beer he thought he would bring out to the blind. That was the last time I asked anyone.

Best read your respective provincial hunting regs VERY CAREFULLY! A CO could and likely WOULD deem that your companion that was just "enjoying the great outdoors" whilst you were hunting - was actually hunting without a licence and had "ditched" his gun on seeing the CO! AND BOTHof you would be trying to prove your INNOCENCE in court after having your guns, binocs, cameras and vehicle(s) seized on the spot!!! Like Robin Hood, anyone messing with "the Queen's" venison face the most SWIFT and SEVERE penalties!!!!

How about assisting a hunter, after a successful hunt..with the task of hauling a carcass out of the bush? Moose guys often request our help with this at the fishing camp I frequent.

Never even considered that there would be any consequences for this.
