Barrel heat is NOT something i ever took attention to.
Until yesterday.

So i finally went to the range after getting my RPAL issued, brought my Savage 64F .22, my dad's Remington 760 in .30-06 and my M305.
My dad asked me to check his scope on his 760 and sure enough, if he was gonna aim for vitals, he would have missed @ 100 yards. I took a picture of the results and let him do the adjustments.
Then i bring out my M305 and get to rezeroing it due to the scope rings getting loose. (i need locktite!)

Fire 2 shots, click click click down, fire 2 more, adjust elevation.
Bulls eye! Awesome and ive still got tons of ammo left.

But as i start firing, i start to notice my gun firing to the right... and down. wtf? So i tweak the scope again and its still going down.
Then it hit me. I had shot like 20 rounds in a limited amount of time and sure enough my barrel was getting friggin hot. My best friend was with me and she told me she could see the mirages around the barrel.

So i let it cool down and bring out the .22 and let her have a go at it. For as much as the magazines SUKC ASS on this gun, the accuracy is great.
I bring out the M305 again 20 min later and sure enough, i have to bring back the scope to what i had it adjusted to when i first started shooting.

So a good lesson learned for me that i just wanted to share.
 
Also, bonus question:

I recently went to the shop to get ammo for this range day and i saw some 125 grain, low recoil (50% less advertised) Remington .308 ammo.... Does anyone have any experience running it through and M305? does it still cycle correctly?
 
I've never run the low recoil stuff thru my Nork, but I would be warry.. not sure the gun will cycle well with it. hpoefully some of the ather more experienced guys will chime in here
 
You need to look a little further. ie loose mount/loose rings/cheap ammo
20 rounds in any time frame, will not cause enough heat to change poi/poa.
I can dump 140 rounds, cook bacon on my barrel, and still hit poa.

Also, ambient temp on your barrel can cause mirage.

I'll pass on the bonus Q, I've never used low recoil ammo.

Back in 1995 we used to hunt with REAL USGI M14 rifles so my favorite was a TRW rig with iron sights and I hunted groundhogs using 125 gr Remmy PSP boolits. I used 43.0 gr W748 ball powder which was part of the standard load for our NRA High Power shooting team days. We always loaded a 168 gr Sierra MK with 43.0 gr W748 for all our practices and matches.

Anyways, this 125 gr PSP boolit would just open up them earth pigs and BLOWED them up REAL good! :D

So here I am with an M1A on this hunt using that 125 gr Remmy PSP boolit. That fellow with my BTW, none of you can see him. I could not black his eyes out. He's now serving with a brown uniformed unit in the CAF/CF. :evil:



Yesterday, I went to sight in my SAI NM (or hybrid wanna-be Super Match) and for horsing around just while in the boresighting stages of adjusting my iron sights, I used a bunch of Sierra 130 gr FNHP (flat nosed hollow points) that are borrowed from my .30-30 reloading booolit pile. Were they ever fun to fire. :D Lots of noise and hardly any boot in the shoulder, there was some recoil, make no mistake, but at least I did not waste my 155 gr Lapua scenar sniper loads at the 50 meter targets.

So about them reduced recoil loads, that's what I've been doing for years. Lots of noise, hardly any kick. Especially at 100m or 200m.. Rest assured they work at 500m because I've competed with the 125 gr PSP booolits in Service Rifle matches with irons sights. All good fun.

thats what i was thinking. 20 rounds aint gonna do sh!t to a barrel.

You should have about 1/16" clearance between the front of the ferrule and the plate, and complete clearance around the gas tube, with the only contact being on the shelf with about 5-7lbs of downward pressure. Lightly grease that spot.

Nice rifle. You only need one and your #### is in no danger.
 
Those plastic stocks are a very bizarre setup.

The stock liner has a gap between the rear vertical recoil pads and the stock itself. This means, if your trigger guard lockup is at all weak, all or most of the recoil force is being absorbed by the 2 stock liner screws. I can't imagine what the wiggling would do to accuracy!
On Norinco plastic stocks I always, at mininmum, plunge route behind the liner and fill it in with bedding compond.
