Got My Alaskan Scout: Doesn't Look Right

Any matte finish like this will mark easily if softer meals are rubbed on it.
It isn't the chrome that gets marked, the softer metal is deposited in the finish like fine sandpaper.
It would probably be easily removed, but for no purpose. It will look like that again after use anyway.
:agree:
Looks like the electrolytic reaction that takes place at the interface between different metals.
If that's the case it isn't going to stop.
I'd be calling Wanstalls for a RMA (return merchandise authorization) number and then shipping the gun back for a full refund.
It's up to Wanstalls to deal with Chiappa.
Wanstalls dropped the ball big time when they didn't open the boxes and check the guns on a special order limited edition run of firearms BEFORE shipping them to customers.

I Agree,a FAIL on this one!!!

So I got it apart last night after all, man was it tight ,the threads were dry no lube ,slapped some gun grease to it , unscrews a lot easer now. The action is pretty smooth and the trigger is allso. As for the sight I think I'll stake it. Slide to one side and punch it a good one, than tap the sight to the center and go from there. Found the action looked a little dirty going to blow it out than oil it lightly not to goober it up to badly. Just itching to go and try it out I'll go for a walk on the back 40 this week end got where my vest its hunting season. Feeling a lot better about it now since that I got it in my hands and able to play with it now, my anxiety is all but gone now Happy Camper ! Best of luck to all you others out there !

Buzzmagoo,
How much force did you finally need to apply before it came apart? I've done everything needed to break it down but it's not budging.

The Mares leg that that I almost ended up with went to the gunsmith at the store. Salesman came out later and the gunsmith said there was no way he was getting it apart and that it had to go back. Yours might be the same. Even with the one I got I have to brace it between my legs and twist with both hands.

My Chiappa Mare's Laig takedown in 44 Mag bought 3+ years ago was perfect.
I guess the odd one slips thru. ;)

I'd be interested to know what Chiappa's position is on this? Wanstall's, I'm assuming you've been in touch with them. Do you deal direct with Chiappa? If so, what are their plans to correct the situation?
The retailer (wanstalls) has not posted since the OP told us what happened after he was told he would get a new replacement rifle but ended up with only a refund. Staying silent on the matter makes things worse rather than posting what is going on IMO

Wanstalls made the mistake of shipping out a defective product rather than checking it before shipping. There is no way that anyone who bought these rifles should get anything less than a full refund or a rifle without defects.

wanstalls has no issue giving a full refund, some people didn't want a refund just a rifle with a proper finish

I sat on the stock and twisted it off with both hands, it was pretty tight no lube dry as a bone. You could try like I did and if that doesn't work, have some one tap on it while torking on it and if it still don't work shoot it good with penetrating oil let it sit awhile and try again. Best of luck! I have taken mine apart a couple times now with it oiled its still tight but I can do it now with out sitting on it.R:d:

HaHa, I ended up sitting on it and twisting with both hands and it finally came loose. Even with some lube it almost took the same amount of force to put it back together and get it lined back up.
After putting it back together though I noticed the front sight was off center, and with only a light tap on the side of the stock it slides right out of the dovetail in the barrel! The dovetail seems to be machined slightly oversized and the front sight will slide right through with no effort. Is there a simple fix for this?

There's a stainless Rossi R92 PUMA carbine (20" bbl) in 454 Casull advertised on the Wanstalls website now.
This is real stainless not make believe stainless that rusts in front of your eyes like the Chiappa.
Get your refund for the Chiappa from hell and use it to buy the Rossi and put the left over $800 in your pocket.
Problem solved.
The Rossi is twice the rifle of any Chiappa.

Sight it and stake it. If the rear sight is adjustable it will be able to correct the sighting once staked.

you can do like me
.Slide the sight to one side get a center punch eye ball the center of the barrel half the dove tail and punch it. You may have to do it a couple of times to get the right tension to hold it where you want it. Go easy don't beat it out of shape. Or you could glue it ,I guess:HR:

On a .44, I would not punch it along the centre of the bore line. You could potentially bulge the bore inward. You'd be better off peening to other side of the centre-line, or just order a replacement marble arms front sight - they are slightly oversize and would probably go in tight, or you could look for an original winchester sight - they have a tensioning screw to lock them in place. Finally, you could put a piece of 1.5" round stock across the dovetail and use a mallet to curl the dovetail edges downward a little and then re-install the OEM sight. This may be enough to hold it and is less unsightly than staking it.
