I have a Remington 597 i just took the range today. It has a volquestrin extractor and hammer.

Out of 150 rounds, i got 4 - 5 failures to feed and a couple incomplete extractions which caused stovepipes.

Is this normal performance? I was using stock gen 3 mags

After 650 rounds of CCI I have only had 1 FTE and that was a few weeks ago at the range. I have all stock 597 except Mcarbo trigger spring and custom bolt handle. Was your gun fully cleaned and lubed before going to range? You should clean out the inside of the mag and spray with dry lube and spray some cleaner like CLP on the extractor.

What ammo?
x2?

I have owned a few 597s, and they run like tops. Some Cycling issues can be caused by ammo, so try a couple different types. Another issue that has popped up for folks are over-torqued guide rods. When Guide rods are too tight they bow, inhibiting bolt cycle. When installing them, turn them hand tight only.

Used to be the first thing to check would be magazines, but gen3 have proven reliable.

MIne had no problem running CCI Minimag since day 1. Still running stock internals. The only mods were an ATI AR Stock, an extended bolt and a reversed hammer spring (similar principle to the Heggis flip that applies to a Browning Buckmark).

I used a variety of ammo, including winchester ,Remington stingers and thunderbolts (more frequent), cci green tags (2 jams out of 20).

I'm starting to wonder if i have a lemon. However, i may have over-lubed it. The guide rod screws were kept loose this time out (they were too tight first time out and i had 2 jams per mag)

The only lube I ever used was dry lube so no chance of over oiling. Did you do any polishing of the guide rails and bolt? My only FTE I had was when the casing just got caught as the bold closed so I just opening the action and the casing fell out.

Guide rails are hardened steel rods. They are generally smooth from the factory though I might be wrong. I have not seen a rough guide rail. You should inspect the bolt carrier that slides into this rail. If you see some burrs inside the bore that glides into the rail, find a suitable reamer to deburr. Otherwise, an exact fit drill bit is your only option. Do it on a drill press to avoid making these oversized that will pose bigger problems with alignment. If you are not sure on how to do it, find somebody who can do it. Safety will be compromised if this is not done correctly. The bolt carrier is MIM and there is a great chance that burrs has not been cleaned properly. BTW, mine is the HB version. They have the same internals, just a difference with the barrel.

no polishing yet. that's next on the list

Check and clean your magazines. The magazine body is MIM, check the seams for overlaps. This will cause the follower to bind. Use Dremel or similar tool to clean overlapping seams.

Mine has zero problems with federal bulk and cci mini mags 36hpa and 40gr round nose, I've had lots of failures with the Remington ammo and I don't even bother with any Winchester rim fire ammo anymore I've never seen bulk rim fire fail as often as I have with the various types of Winchester.

Make sure the set screws that holt the guide rods in are not tight against the guide rods. Back them out so they are flush with the receiver. When tightened, they can bow the rods causing the bolt to bind.

Been done. No binding.

Where on Earth are you getting Mini Mags from. Can't find any in the GTA for the past few months!

Already done. Got the Pro-Mag mag's to work properly now. Too much extra plastic moulding crap hanging off the bolt-hold-open-nipple. OEM mags worked fine, but will polish them inside and out with metal polish this weekend.

Just a late update:

I polished the inside of the 10 round Remington mags (with metal polish cotton), and now the rifle works flawlessly with CCI MiniMags, which I stocked up on.

Made me also realize the Promag mags didn't actually work. They would jam every few rounds, even with the CCI MiniMags. I just thought it was normal when the Remington mags jammed as well.

So now I'm on the hunt for a reliable extended magazine that works in the 597

I know. So bad. Talk about a late necro post.

I came upon this thread again accidentally and felt compelled to update it with the resolution
