Ruffbird are you using .38's for grouse hunting?
No,...I use handloaded 357 mag loaded down with either DEWC or RNFP cast bullets & fast powder like Red Dot or W-231 powders. I don't remember even trying .38 spl ammo in it....

Pretty much "unobtanium" these days, so if he wants it, he'd better strike quick. Only caveat might be if it is from the early "Remlin" days when quality went down. I have one (c.1990) in .44 mag. that I really like and wouldn't mind one in .357 but the Rossi is about all that's available- and also around $600. Apparently the Rossi is also pretty good, though.
I had an JM Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag and a 16" bbl pre-safety/pre-taurus Amadeo Rossi 92 in 44 Mag.
The Rossi was quite a bit lighter and more accurate with the cheap Winchester "white box" 240 grain SPs which I have a stockpile of so I dumped the Marlin 1894 and kept the Rossi.
Sold the JM for more than I paid for it new.

You're not helping, you know... I'm already sorely tempted by the Rossi. I keep hoping that Wanstall's will be sold out by the time I finally cave in.![]()
..You probably know the Rossi quality control inspector quite well.
It's the guy you see in the shaving mirror every morning if you know what I mean....
I consider myself blessed to be an owner of a JM stamped Marlin 1894C.
Probably my favorite rifle.
Cabelas has the 1894C on sale for $611, but backordered. Anyone find any at all?
I checked with a favorite dealer of ours in AB, who confirmed with their Canadian distributor who advised of the following:
Product 70410 is not in stock, in fact they have not yet been produced or shipped to Canada in 2014.
Production is set for mid-November and stretches all the way to March 2015 so I am thinking ETA will be Spring of 2015.
$699.00 and will probably change in one month when we get the 2015 pricelist.
Got a JM stamped Marlin 1894 cowboy limited...aka octagonal barrel, the configuration I love, in .357.
It's heavier and not as swift as the 1894c but I love this model the most. It was made some time in 2008 and has a cross bolt safety which doesn't seem to affect anything really. No idea why people, especially right hand people, dislike it.

Just picked one up. Sweet little rifle to go along with my also newly acquired 1895GBL
