A while back I saw a .30.06 garand. Since then ive been wanting one or a similar milsurp semi auto rifle in that caliber. My sks almost suits my needs, if it came in .30.06 it would be perfect.
I have been told garands arent legal in Canada (although I cant see why not) ive also been told they are.
Either way I cant seem to track any down or find an exact answer if we can get them here. Are there other milsurp rifle options in Canada in that caliber ? Bolt or semi auto and fairly inexpensive.
Thanks!

well they are legal. they go for $1000+ normally.
there is lots of milsurp 30-06s
the only other semi I think is the johnson rifle but there is lots of mauser rifles converted to 30-06 and there is the P17 that was originally 30-06 and the 1903.

what are you looking for? shooting or collecting?

Please enlighten us. Where on earth are you finding LOTS OF SURPLUS 30-06?????

Also, don't forget the venerable FN49, which may be cheaper than a Garand.

Shooting. Im trying to find a rifle that isnt too fancy or expensive for beating around the woods. I mostly dont want to beat my bench rifle up anymore. And .30.06 seems like a the best caliber for my use. My current rifle is a .308 and my previous was a .300 winmag. Mostly it has to be reliable, rugged and inexpensive. Im not really concerned about weight ive carried some of the heavier rifles in the past and it doesnt bother me a whole lot.

Besides the M1 Garand, which can be owned by anyone with a valid PAL, the next most common .30-06 MILSURP is the Model 1917 Enfield. After that the M1903 Springfield, the semi-auto FN 49, and a number of military Mausers which were chambered in .30-06. Garands cost $1000-$1200 and up nowadays depending on condition. Model 1917s are $500- $800 and nice M1903s are $800-$1200. FN was producing nice Mausers in .30-06 during the 1950s. These turn up occasionally.

The .30-06 is always a great choice for reloading and you can also shoot commercial .30-06 ammo in any of the surplus bolt guns. Commercial ammo should be avoided in a Garand unless using one of the aftermarket adjustable gas plugs which will let you shoot it w/o risk of damaging the op rod.

Thanks! Im checking out all these selections now. Wow that FN49 is really perfect for my use. Anybody know any issues this rifle might have ? And who might carry these for sale ?

well for a shooter I would keep my eyes out for a converted mauser 98. usually you can find them at gun shows or auctions. they are good guns you should be able to get a good one for under $400. a guy at the last Orangeville gun show had a sporter P17 for $200. so just keep your eyes out.

A sporterized US Model of 1917 may suit you fine as it would be the most inexpensive, easiest to find and you can knock it about as much as you want.

You're not going to find anyone who "carries" that kind of milsurp rifle, unless you want a Russian. Your only option is getting lucky and buying used. However a nice 30-06 FN 49 will set you back as much as a shooter grade Garand.

SVT is close in power to the 30'06, but of course a different cartridge, ammo is easy enough to find.
Tradex has tons of nice 96 and 98 sporters in various calibers including 30'06.

Garand, Springfield and FN49 all come to mind.

I sure wonder who would have told you Garands are not legal here? What a bunch of hogwash. Even the 8 round en-bloc clips are legal, makes them even more fun.

Just an add, post war,(WW1) Winchester had lots of M1917 recievers in the pipeline. They ground off the rear sight ears, put a sporter stock on it,put a leaf sight on the barrel, blued it, and called it the model 30. That lasted until December 7th 1941
