Laminated?

What does anyone think about a laminated stock vs synthetic? How do they compare for durability, use in extreme cold etc? They sure look nice, IMO. Thanks!!

laminate tends to be heavy but very stable. to me laminates feel good to the hand. cold and wet don't effect them like nice walnut. much cheaper than good layed up stocks like mcmillan. a boyds laminate arround $150 to the door a mac closer to $600+ and a b&c $400. laminates are probably strong enough to beat an animal to death with.

The way I see it, laminate is more durable and stable than natural walnut, but synthetic is lighter, more weather resistant and CAN be more accurate shooting depending how it's made and what it's made of. Laminate is also more attractive than synthetic and can add the necessary mass to a heavy-recoil gun to help make it easier to shoot.

Upside is they're very durable, usually the least expensive option(unless you get bottom of the barrel plastic) and they're very rigid.
Downside is they're heavy and slick without good checkering.

Check boyds new website, god vid showing difference between injection molded vs laminate. High end synthetic or fibreglass/carbon fibre would be good a swell. Laminate more stable than solid wood for warping/cracking - usually.

I have dozens of laminate stocks... I prefer it to all other materials for a working gun... it is not as pretty as nicely grained walnut, but looks much better than ugly synthetic... the downside for some is the weight... personally, I like a hefty gun on the bench or in the field... and I don't mind hauling it around.

You may never know until you are hunting in wet conditions . . . and that will change again when that wet turns to ice.
One of my rifles has a Hogue Over molded stock and it I can feel the grip even when wet but don't know yet about ice.
Beautiful, pretty and functional are all in the owner's mind.

mcmillan will be more 850 for those days ...

i like more and more laminate. now i need to find one kind for my zastava rifles ...

the one on my rugers are really great.

I love the laminate on my .338 RUM in a Remmy 700 LSS. The extra weight is nice and it is very durable. It has been hunted with and still looks as new as the day I got it.
