I'm looking for a scope for my 7mm mag and would like opinions on the best all around scope. I'd like to be able to shoot out to 400 or 500 yards and still be able to shoot up close at 100 yards. Also a good scope for low light and sunny conditions. Thanks and if you have a good scope for sale that would work for me, give me a PM.

My preference is for lighter weight scopes. I'd go VX2 3-9x40 with the lr reticle. I also like the 2.5-8 Leupolds. Zeiss Conquests were/are ok too. If you're not too concerned about weight there are plenty of good options. A $$ figure would help a little.

I'm looking for a scope in the $1000.00 range or lower and would prefer a lighter weight scope. I have glasses, so I'm not sure how that would effect the decision in the scope that would be best for me. My eyesight is starting to get worse as I'm in my mid forties and it seems my arms need to get longer every year to be able to read close up.

3.5-10 x 40 VX3 with B&C. About as good as it get for the zero to 500 stuff, light weight, long eye relief to keep your eye-glasses away from the ocular, no knobs to turn for your stated ranges, and bordering on bullet proof. Look around a bit and you will find one for considerably less than $1000.

If you happen to prefer a 2.5-8 or 4.5-14 in the same series that would work about as well.

I've done some research and this looks like a great scope, but I'm having a hard time finding a dealer in Canada. Every site of tried won't ship to Canada.

.. that would be why the 3-9,40 was invented .. although there used to be a great 2.5-10 Balvar .. excellent optics .. just a tad heavy

Just curious why you want to keep open sights?

It's a unfired Winchester model 70 rem mag that my Dad bought around 1980 and I'd like to keep the open sight usable. My Dad is 84 years old and has just over 80 rifles, that have never been shot, all where bought between 1950-1990 which I will be receiving in the very near future. He had a habit of buying 2 of every rifle, one to shoot and one to keep unfired.Lucky for me I guess being the only child.

My Dad has been having health issues for the past couple years and it looks like I will be taking over the collection very soon. I will post pics of the collection once I have them and they will be past down to my son when I am at the age that I feel they should be past on.

Personally I'd take the sights off and keep them in a box somewhere for when you want to be nostalgic and use a set of fixed rings but QD rings are an option for sure. If it's in the budget, a scope with a high magnification range would be my choice on a 7RM that I needed to use close up and "out there" Mine wears a 3-15x42 with ballistic reticle for that exact purpose.

That maybe a good option.

A couple good options:

Leupold VX3 2.5-8X36 - light and about $600. Nice on low rings if you lose the open sights.
Sightron SIIB 3-9x42 HHR - still pretty light and under $600. Sightron make very nice glass at SIIB and SIII.

I'll word it so you understand.....Why would he want to detach the scope from a 7RM?

I understood just fine. You were just itching for a response to your bait so you can add your list of why you don't want open sights on a gun. How about giving him options on detachable scope mounts instead, like he asked?

Would a quick detach base be an option I should look at?

If you'd like to keep the irons on, then by all means do it. Most of my rifles have detachable mounts with iron sights. There's nothing wrong with them and they can be very helpful in many situations. You can remove the scope when following up a blood trail in cover, I do this all the time. For quick follow up shots, they can't be beat. They will also keep your rifle useful when if the scope breaks. As the old saying goes, it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Talley makes a quality set of detachable rings/bases that would suit your purpose just fine. I just installed a set on a Winchester M70. Leupold also has the quick detach mount and the QRW rings, but I prefer Talley for a bit more money.

Here's the M70 with Talley QD mounts. Scope is a Leupold VX2 3-9x40, nothing fancy but covers a good range and probably the most common zoom range for a hunting rifle in Canada. This one's a 30-06 so not quite the reach of your 7 RM maybe.

LOL...apparently you didn't understand me just fine. I was asking an honest question of the OP...not itching for a response from you or anyone else except the OP.....lol

I honestly don't see the point of iron sights on a 7RM used at ranges of 100-400 yards. On some guns they make sense but others they really don't. I was curious as to why he was thinking of going that route. He answered.....sheeesh.
