7-08 ttsx 140. Elk?

First off its a blr with 20 inch barrel. Should be getting around 2750 out of the round. Is this fast enough to open up the ttsx?

It's a backup rifle to 30-06. Am I asking too much of the blr to put down a bull elk? Never shot anything before with barnes bullets. Kinda thinking I should find another rifle as a backup for an elk hunt.. But tell me your thoughts.
 
I wouldn't hesitate to use it. No hail marry shots, pass on poor angles and proceed to let some light into the vitals of whatever member of the deer family you want. I would try and keep shots inside 300 yards but that has more to do with my personal comfort range then my confidence in that bullets ability to perform.
 
FWIW, I've been using 140 grain in my 6.5 55 for elk and moose the last 5 years or so with no complaints. Have no experience with the ttsx but have a box in 130 grain I would like to try soon, based on BC steve's bullet review. Let us know how it works if you use it.
 
This will work just fine!! I would limit range to c. 250M, and be careful with placement [as we always should]

You'll be fine. A 140gr TTSX is easily the equivalent or superior to a 160gr or 175gr cup and core bullet. And as BUM said, don't do anything stupid.

Hope I don't need to use a backup to the 30-06, but if I do, ttsx reports are to follow..

Barnes states minimum expansion velocity for ttsx bullets is 2000 fps, calculate your maximum distance to this velocity drop and stay within it, perhaps even cutting back 50 yards for a 'safety cushion' and keep shots within that distance.
 
Personally I had convinced myself I needed a 338 Win Mag or a 340 Weatherby mag for Elk some day ;-) Have even convinced my wife that every different type of game requires a specialized different rifle.

Guess I might have to take an elk hunt on next year with my 280AI with the 150gr TTSX it shoots so well. Darn!

Somebody tell me that I need more gun. I need the excuse.

140 sst will do the job , you need to break the shoulder in 1 min a dead elk running can travel a few klms
and the terrain is nasty better to damage a little meat than lose the hole animal
this bull was out at 350 with a 6.5 x55 shooting 140 sst

7mm 140gr TTSX will do the job on elk and so will my 139gr GMX from my 7mm-08.
But....in my latest harvest of two smalish deer ( at 90m and 150m) with perfect ribs/double lung shots I experience extensive bloodshot damage to said ribs and shoulder areas.
Is 2800fps to fast? Should I change the bullet for heavier/slower one?
Next year I will rebarel my LH Ruger to tried and true 308W/165gr that I never had that kind of meat loss.
 
I have never left more than a 2" wound channel thru a deer with my 7-08 and more often then not when I lung shoot them it's far enough back from the shoulder there is no meat loss just a rib cage full of jello and holes on both sides...

I took a Texas heart shot on my buck last year, bullet went in the left hip to the bone dislocating the joint, made a 90* right turn and broke the right and exited in 2 pieces... Total meat lost, maybe a pound and a half?
 
They say the the best kill speed is around 2000 fps and I use 140 sst and at close range I just punch a nice golf ball size hole .
Sounds like you hit bone that does make a mess but I bet it stoped in its tracks
 
I've been using 139 SST's, 140 TSX's and 140 Berger VLD's in my 7-08. The Berger 140's with IMR-4350 are the most accurate so far....for next year I'm thinking I'll give heaver bullets a go in the 160-175 range with reloader 19, should beable to get around the 2700ft/sec mark.

I can push a 162 Amax to 2850 without pressure signs in a 24" tube but YMMV...
