What are my options for an LER scope that won't break the bank? I sourced a Brass Stacker mount for my M38 (don't trust the cheapo "eBay and Amazon" available mounts), and I'm going to want to mate it with a decent LER scope.

The "NCStar/AIM" LER scopes (they're the same manufacturer, just different lables, as far as I can tell), are cheap but....

They're cheap.

I don't trust them to hold up, and I doubt the claims of clarity. Actually, I know they're not that clear. I've borrowed/tried at the range rifles that have had the NCStar/AIM scopes mounted on them, that the owner swore were crystal clear. Those owners have obviously never looked through a Leupold or Nikon, or even a Vomz scope.

Hi-Lux/Leatherwood scopes look fairly decent, but for some reason what goes for $150 in the US is going to run me $300 up here.

What am I missing? Is there something available up here in the sub $400 range (preferably much, much sub) that offers a decently clear optic, that isn't going to rattle itself to bits on a Mosin carbine?

Preferred options:

  • Either a 2x-7x variable (there's a Hi-Lux available up here for $300 with that), or a 4x fixed.
  • Fine cross-hair duplex, or mil-dot reticle(no fancy range finders cluttering up the sight picture)
  • Eye relief: 8.5-13ish - somewhere in there. I'll have wiggle room with the Brass Stacker mount.
  • $400 top end price, prefer much less than that, if I can get something decent.

I know $300-$400 seems steep for an M38 optic, but at some point when I get around to building out an M14, I would want a LER scope in the bag to maybe try on it. Essentially, I don't mind paying a bit more for a scope that will likely migrate between rifles over time.

Any thoughts? Experiences? Am I dreaming if I think I can get a decent LER scope for less than the $500 and up that the name brand scopes seem to command?

Thanks, more options to roll around in my mind and keep me indecisive. Oh well, it's going to take a few weeks for the Brass Stacker mount to arrive.

lalunette: That was a smokin deal you got on the Bushnell, I can't find them for anywhere near that price.

If you are looking to mount a scope on a rifle in a scout configuration, then you need an IER (Intermediate Eye Relief) scope. The Long Eye Relief scopes are meant to be used on target pistols.
Leupold has one such model, the FX-II Scout IER scope. At least some dealers should have it in stock if you ask.

I have the hi-lux on my savage scout. Its pretty good and I'm happy with it. The best thing I can say about it is the warranty that it came with. The first one I got was a lemon out of the box and with in a few days Wolverine swapped it no questions.

He crosshairs are sharp and lenses are clear. Its very quick and easy to get your rifle up and on target. I am really likin the scout rifles.

Ive heard good things about the burris, and as always the leupold is all the rave. But if you want something simple that will work and wont break a budget, the hi-lux is a good choice.

I installed the Hi-Lux on my M44, using a S&K mount, and I couldn't be happier. Took my first Buck with it last week! I believe the Hi-Lux is $189.

Hi-lux should try and figure out how to shrink that scope down a bit in length......it's a long "scout" scope.
Why put the scope out front if you can't access the bolt area easily and trail carry the rifle with your hand wrapped around the action ......?

Well, this came back from the dead with a fury....

Thanks for the extra input... The Hi-Lux is right up the alley of what I was looking for. And the price is pretty decent at Wolverine.

I hear yeah. I was a tad disapointed when it was mounted up now that you mention it. I was hoping it would be mounted farther down the barrel leaving the action more accessible. I do like the openess when lookig down the sights. Your field of view is very open for close range.

But yeah, chaulk that down as a negative for the hi-lux. Needs even longer eye relief

Ok, I was going to ask about that, if you'd set it that far back out of preference, or if that was what you had to set it to. Looking at the Wolverine site, the spec says it should be good out to 13.5" - which should allow you to set it far enough forward to clear the bolt. Was one of these the one you got, or was it a different model with less generous eye relief? (NB: the second one has different eye relief specs listed in the specs vs. the summary):

^^^I can't speak to the model you inquire about but I do run the Hi-Lux/Leatherwood product (M-1200 + M-1000). I found their product to be a great value and bang for the buck spent. However as will happen at times with ANY brand, and after a couple of years of use, I experienced what could be described as a quality problem. Without getting into a very long story what I will say is this...Hats off to both HiLux AND their dealer Wolverine. The way I have been treated by both to date is in my mind "The Gold Standard" in post sale customer service and how to deal with issues and a manufacturers LIFETIME warranty long after the purchase is made. Nothing short of "Exceptional"!

They both have a customer for life in me. I will be buying another HiLux product in the future just for that type of security alone.

Good luck friend. I hope this helps.

Sorry delayed answere. But thats were the eye relief lined up best. Anymore forward and he image would begin to 'tunnel'. I did buy it from wolverine and there warranty is outstanding. Brought the bad scope in while i was driving through, and picked up brand new scope a few days later on my way back Sask. It was also nice to meet the guys i send my bonuses to. Lol.
