I am a plinker with squirrel duty required. I have seen the CZ 512 on the web and handled a 10/22 at the dealer. Given my mission is there a benefit in the CZ 512 or will 10/22 be good enough. Thanks!!

Oh upgrading out of a million year old Coey bolt single shot.

Downside to the CZ 512 - Only 5 and 10 round mags are available. It's expensive.

Upside to the 512 - unlike the Ruger, you won't need to burn through a 100 round drum to stand a chance of hitting what you're pointing at.

Many squirrels, grouse, rabbits, coons, skunks, etc. Have fallen to my Stock, old school 10/22...Tank tough, fun, descent accuracy...I love the 10/22 However I also shoot a Cooper Custom Classic, if yo wanna shoot for $$$. Respectfully Jim

Sounds like you want a semi…all depends on your budget.
For "plinking and squirrel duty"…don't over look the Marlin 60. Great tube mag capacity, inexpensive & proven design. Avail in synthetic or wood stocks, blue or stainless bbls. Upgrade to Tech Sights and enjoy….

I hunt squirrels with my bolt action CZs but I also have a CZ 512 and used to have a 10-22. Both guns, as they come from the factory, have triggers that need work IMO, even just for squirrel hunting. If you are handy you could do the trigger work yourself (instructions can be found on CGN for 10-22 trigger improvements and rimfire central shows how to improve the 512). BTW, it is easier to improve the 10-22 trigger... Sometime ago I compared the accuracy of both guns (both with improved triggers no other mods). My 512 was significantly more accurate than my 10-22.
The 512 will cost you about $250 more than a basic 10-22 and for that price difference you could do some major upgrades to the 10-22 (new barrel from Dlask or a new trigger group, etc). I like CZs because of their value/workmanship/accuracy.

If your pockets are deep, have a look at the Browning Buckmark rifle. Very cool, handy, accurate little carbine. No mods needed other than a decent scope. Mine is the sporter version wearing a Weaver 3-9 AO classic scope.

Of course a 10 22 will be enough. All modern 22's will be enough. So go with what you like. Later, if you want to upgrade, well either you upgrade your 10 22 or you sell and buy something else. Do not neglect the EE in your search. You could find a good deal on something in there.
Keep us posted on your choice.

10/22 willshoot as good as you can. Put a scope on it.

Not the one I had.

Bought a marlin m60. Most accurate gun for the money I've used. Got mine for under $200. Sr22 I had shot 3"+/- groups at 30 yards. Marlin was average .5" at 50 yards with mini mags and cci blazer 50 round boxes.
Sr22 $600, marlin m60 $180.

Maybe the 10/22's form 20 years ago were better but I wouldn't be buying a new one. Local shop sent one back because you couldn't even pull the bolt back it was so rough inside.

^ditto. I've never shot a 512, but I've owned a new 10/22 and if you ever shot it..."accurate" wouldn't be the first thing to come to mind. A pop can was pretty safe at 50 yards, even off a rest. My opinion~get a Marlin 795 or Marlin 60 if you have an urge to buy a semi, or (better yet) upgrade to a really nice bolt action repeater. I'd recommend a CZ.

10/22 & 795 & 512's are plinkers out of the box... they can be made to shoot very well with some elbow grease, time and money... but if you are a squirrel hunter (unless you mean shooting them off your bird feeder), you should look at a nicer bolt action... consider a CZ 452 Lux, Varmint or American, or Ruger 77/22... a good scope with some magnification in the 12-16X (or more) range on the top end will help also.

For squirrels I mostly use HM2's now, but still occasionally carry my LR rifles in 452 FS or 77/22 RSI... they sure feel good draped over my forearm when strolling through the beech forests.

Ok narrowed to four...cz512,452, 10/22 and lastly the Browning BLR 22... Not a fan of their auto.....has anyone tried the lever?
